hi beachgirl, this answer may varies on others, please take mine with a pinch of salt
for me, i do deep breathing in and out during BM, so the stools will be able to pass out easily from the natural pushing movements of your anal muscles.
In one sense, there must be some pushing involved (yes gentle ones) to start the ball rolling, however, it shldn't be a conscious one (like straining, holding your breath), it should be a sub-conscious one where ur anal muscles does its own job.
Bottomline is, u r not alone. I do at times need to push gently so as to initiate the motion, cos sometimes the initial bit is semi-hard and then the rest would follow.
