What To Do If You Feel Like Constipation(to prevent re-tear)

Postby fissurepaingy » 26 Jan 2012, 20:25

Won't go into my whole story, but I had 2 surgeries (1st LIS+Fistulotomy, then had to have another Fistulotomy touch-up). Think I had a re-tear of something, fissure or fistula repair site, not sure which, but it was because of some constipation one morning a couple days ago which caused some blood. Anyway, my question is, if your sitting there about to go and you feel like it's going to be hard to get out and constipated.. what is the best thing to do? Just not go and wait it out? Have suppositories or something on hand to stick up there and lube up the stool? Because I wanted to get it out and I purposely strained hard to push it out, bad idea I realize now! Any info on this would be appreciated.

I read another guy who said to have glycerine suppositories handy, and they work quickly too.
When I was recovering from my episiotomy from hell, and felt like that, I went and laid down and drank glass after glass of water (i got that tip from a nurse on the provincial help line).
DO NOT STRAIN. It will come when it is ready if you are patient and drink lots of water. I remember I waited about an hour drinking water before I got the urge again, and then it was fine.
lubricate your anus with vaseline is a great idea too.

If you feel constipated and want quick and painless relief, gets some Milk of Mag, take a whole capful and drink a whole glass of water. In a couple of hours it will do the trick

Hi Mrs.inpain,
Perhaps you need to switch your stool softener?
I never found colace did anything for me. Drinking lots of water was more effective.
A lot of people on this forum prefer mirilax, although I don't do it myself. I believe stool softeners aren't effective unless you still drink lots of water. I mean LOTS.

Hi Ms inpain
I am not sure what you are using, but Miralax seems to be the choice around here. I can tell you that it works like a charm for me. Start with 1 cap a day and adjust as you need. Drink lots of water with it. The colace does not do anything long term. Also eat high fiber 20-25 grams a day. I don't take a supplement, they are too bulking for me. If you are having a terrible time try the MOM to get things moving, and try not to push, you don't want to do anything to your surgery site.
