if u eat too much fiber, the stools will definitely be firm/bulky, esp. if u didn't compensate it with enough water. Remember, fiber is to keep ur bowels regular, and they do so by making ur stools bulky. What u need is a combination of both fiber and a softener (such as water, prune juice, flaxseeds, magnesium oxide, miralax, etc) to soften the stools. Never ever LOAD UP TOO MUCH ON FIBER, else u may retear urself if your stools are too bulky or firm.
If you like to have more ideas, take a look at the thread "success story"

I find the most helpful fibre (as well as being celiac and diabetic friendly) for me is from plain cooked beans, lentils, or thick split pea soup. I don't eat more than 1/2 cup at a time so the gas problem doesn't get bad. For breakfast this morning I had 1/2 cup of kidney beans with olive oil and a grated carrot and apple salad. Works good for me.
I would have thought that a very strange breakfast at one time before I had this demon in the rear end!

apples are great for your butt! (although I must confess I don't like them that much...)
you want to try to get more soluble fibre which is less bulking.
do a search on this forum for soluble and you will find a link in the first topic to a website that lists the soluble and insoluble amounts in difference veggies, fruits and grains.
I personally like prune juice and metamucil. Metamucil is psyllium which has both types of fibre in it. I also do a spoonful of olive oil twice a day.
Usually if your stool is still too firm, you aren't getting enough liquid (water, juice, herbal tea).
It takes a while to find something that works for you.
Like Dwarf says, a lot of people here do miralax as a way of insuring their stool stays soft despite what they eat. But it also requires lots of water to work.

don't forget to chew everything very thoroughly!
I eat a lot of stuff, but chewing three times as much as I used to made a lot of difference.

Its finding that right balance that will take time.Experimenting with different foods and types of fiber, but also making sure to get plenty of fluids, its really important!
It took me about 8 months to find the right diet that works for me.I lost 10 pounds too,Im already too thin,so I could not afford that. Now I have a smoothie every morning with oatmeal, bran flakes, flax oil, pumpkin, banana, honey and milk. This mixture really helps my BM's and I have been gaining some weight back too.
Also what Pat said about chewing,I do that as well, and I find it does make a difference!Im glad you mentioned that.

MIRALAX, MIRALAX, MIRALAX! I tried everything to get my stool consistently soft, but nothing worked until I started taking Miralax (I take a half of a dose daily plus 9 grams of Benefiber).

For me right balance is half sachet of movicol in morning.

Breakfast
Oatmeal with some yogurt.

Lunch
Boiled chicken, salads and some potatoes for lunch.

Dinner
Fish with salads and buckwheat

Late dinner
Oatmeal and yogurt.

This is what I am eating already 8 months everyday. It keeps me confident about my stools, and don't make constipated.
Also it makes me to gain some weight, instead of losing the same

Oatmeal and yogurt MMM-mmm!!!

I thought I was the only one who loved this.

My perfect diet:

Breakfast:
Big bowl of cereal(shredded W & Wheaties) with 2% milk and glass of juice.

Lunch: Usually skipped
But if so very light... can of V8 with some unsalted mixed nuts and or dried
fruit of-cranberries raisins bananas etc.

Dinner:
Double serving of either spinach broccoli or B-sprouts, and either a double
serving of some protein shake or baked chicken and glass of milk.

1 and a half quarts of water early in the day and again late in the day.
With this diet I'll never have to worry about constipation or anything!
