Magnesium supplements. Do they work.

Postby lambertoz » 15 Feb 2012, 03:37

Hi
Does anyone know how much magnesium you can take on a daily basis. The ones I am taking have 75mg and I have to take 4. So that's 300mg. Is this enough?

It depends how much you weigh and how sensitive your system is. I used to take 200mg/ day as a muscle relaxant that helped me go to sleep. At that level it didn't make my stools any looser which wasn't my aim at the time.
I would think 300 would be plenty though unless you are over 200lb.
Do you notice any difference?
If not, perhaps you could try taking it when your spasms start. It works quickly, which is why I took it before bed instead of say, after dinner or something.
As a side benefit, I have had much milder cramping at that time of the month since I started taking magnesium.

I read in one of my books that you shouldn't take more than 750mg in one day. I have to take 300 mg twice a day to get any benefit from it and I weigh 150 lbs.
I'm wondering if it makes any difference with the form mg is in such as citrate, or oxide etc.
