LIS tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

Postby Davo » 13 Mar 2012, 06:33

Hi Guys,
Its my turn for LIS surgery tomorrow and my GTN days have finally come to an end!! I am currently compiling a list of questions for my CRS and wondered if there is anything else that you think i should add?
I will try and ask them all and will post his responses on here in a few days.
This is my list so far:
What is the best thing to take for pain relief?
When can the dressing be removed and how should this be done?
Should a new dressing be applied afterwards?
Should I be taking laxatives?
Will the first toilet visit be painful? Should I expect much blood?
What is the best method of cleaning after a toilet visit?
How do I dry the area after bathing? Is a hair dryer best?
How long will healing take?
If a fissurectomy is required, will this be carried out at the same time?
Are haemorrhoids treated at the same time?
How long does a full recovery normally take?
When could I return to work?
How long should I stay on the softeners for and when should I be able to eat and drink normally again?
What are the incontinency risks in the longer term, say 10-15 years?
Do I need to avoid lifting & straining myself for a while?

My biggest question would be how to prepare for the first BM. Is the goal to make the first bowel movement as soft and painless as possible (i.e., like melted ice cream by loading up on the Miralax!).
Also, how long should I expect it to take before I have my first bowel movement?
What kinds of foods should I be eating after surgery?
How do I know what is considered normal during the post-op? When will I know if I should contact a doctor?
Good luck! I will be thinking about you and praying for a painless and speedy recovery!

hi davo, can't think of anything else to add to the list, seems to cover all the bases. I would like to offer you advice as far as recovery is concerned, but as you know, it's different for all of us. I may have had severe burning for 7 days and then began to lessen after that point and just kept getting better. But no matter what THIS SURGERY WAS WELL WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!! You're silver lining is within arm's reach from tomorrow morning on!!!!!! Best Wishes, keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!!!!!

Davo, I think those are all the right questions. Gosh, I don't know if I can think of any more that you should ask . . .
They may give you a list of post-op instructions -- I didn't get such a list, but some people do.
Good luck, take care, and keep us posted!

Towards the evening now in the UK, so hopefully you are back home and on the new road that leads to recovery and a AF-worry less life!

Hi guys,
I can't thank you enough for your kind words and encouragement. Its currently 10am and I am laid in bed watching TV with my iPad so I will give you the full details of my experience once I get hold of my laptop.
Before my surgery I read so many posts that simply quoted the surgery as being a breeze but for me it was more like a sunny day. If I was to quote my pain score to you right now it would be about 1 out of 10
Anyway I have TV to watch so I will give you a write up later.
Thanks again - you guys are like my extended family now :D

Davo, so glad to hear you are on the other side. My first BM was a bit weird and somewhat painful, mainly because I couldn't really tell whether I had to go or was just passing gas. After a dump, I would dab the area clean, with as little fore and aft movement as possible. When I got the area as clean as I could with toilet paper, I would then use Preparation H towelettes, which are treated with aloe Vera and witch hazel. Then, instead of a standard sitzbath, I would jump into the shower and use the hose and flex wand to spray water directly at the anal area. Make sure the water is Luke warm when doing this.
I never had to "repack" the site. I just used the Tucks pads I was given at the hospital. These worked fine. At first, I was changing them out every two hours. Now, two weeks post surgery, I change them every four hours.
My CRS gave me Loritab (like Vicodin) for the pain, but I never used them. Ibuprofen was fine, at least for me. I have continued with my pre surgery diet for the most part, and I'm still taking my Metamucil and MiraLAX as before. I figure why tempt fate. My healing is coming along well, so I guess I'm doing something right.
I have been careful to not do anything too strenuous, and will slowly add more activity as time goes along. That said, I was at my day hospital program the day after surgery, and was fine if a bit uncomfortable sitting.
Good luck in your healing.
