Day 15 post surgery - first pain free bm in nearly a year!!!

Postby Kat » 06 Jul 2012, 15:51

Today is my 40th birthday and there was no better birthday present this morning than to have a pain free bm!!!
After suffering from anal fissures on and off for 12 years (I first experienced an af with childbirth), last August I got one that would just not heal. I had a skiing accident last year that meant I was on some strong pain killers for a few days which led to dreadful constipation. So after eleven months of pain, bleeding, the odd good day but mostly bad days and with much trepidation I finally had the surgery 15 days ago.
I will not get my hopes up that I am finally cured forever. Nor will I go crazy with the cake and champagne as I have lived with an af long enough to know that you have good days and bad days and it's two steps forward and one step back. But I have to say I feel like I have run a marathon and just crossed the finish line and I just had to share. :D

Great b'day present! My surgery was 9 days ago and I just had my 45th b'day the other day. I think my AF was also a result of pain killers due to a back injury (that also required surgery) a couple of years ago.

Congrats on being pain free after suffering so long Kat! That is awesome!! I actually got my fissure for my 40th B-day. I had my LIS almost 2 years ago and have been doing great since.
I was extra careful the first year and things just went great. I'm sure they will for you too and it will be safe to say cured soon :)

Thanks for your good wishes everyone!
It's now day 18 post surgery and I have been all good since Day 15.
Ooh fingers crossed it lasts. The trick now will be to stay disciplined and continue to eat well and drink lots of water.

Hi Kat,
I'm very happy that you are pain free.
Can I ask, where did you go for your op and who was the surgeon?

Em - it was Dr Phillip Jeans, he's a Gastroenterologist (sp?) in Canberra. I'd been fobbed off by GPs with this for years and it was such a relief to find a doctor who understood and knew what was going on. I just wish I'd insisted on getting a referral sooner. If you're in Sydney though I am sure there's plenty of good specialists there.

Thanks Kat.
I had a fistula removed a year and 2 weeks ago - I then had 2 colonoscopies within the space of 3 months and the surgeon enlarged my anus.
I have been blood-free for about 7 months now but still get a little bit of irritation - itchy if I don't use cream etc.
I was interested in who you went to if I ever had to have more surgery so that you for the info.
