Open or closed LIS experiences

Postby Strangeworldaf » 04 Aug 2012, 12:02

I was wondering if anyone here at the forum had an closed-LIS? The reason being in close LIS there are no stiches and less bleeding.

Actually, I had a closed LIS with stitches. Just because you have a closed LIS doesn't mean you won't have stitches - it is up to the surgeon. My CRS prefers a stitch because he said he thinks it reduces the chance of an infection. I had minimal bleeding (more like spotting) post-LIS. In fact, if I hadn't been looking for it, I probably wouldn't have even noticed it.

Thanks much for the information....was there a reason why here CRS opted for closed and open? Most of the doctors in Asia prefer closed but my understanding is that very few in US perform closed?.....any inputs?

I think it is a matter of preference. According to my CRS, both are equally effective. In the practice I go to, one of the surgeons does closed LIS's and the other does open LIS's. Go figure. My CRS did say that studies have shown that the incontinence rate is lower with closed LIS's.
