Have the surgeory--don't delay!

Postby FeelingGood » 12 Sep 2012, 13:49

Hello all,
I've been reading this forum for months now but it is my first time posting.
I suffered with my fissure for about six mnths or so before finally being referred to a surgeon. The pain was excruciating, as members of this board will know.
I experienced intense pain from spasms which would last from eight to ten hours after a bowel movement. Nothing seemed to help--over-the-counter pain meds did nothing, same for lidocaine and even nitro creme. I worried about surgeory but after five months of suffering I was ready for anything.
I have read posts on this board and others about, shall we say poor experiences after LIS and espescially, fissurectomies. My surgeon (in Canada, by the way) was adamant about removing the fissure and this concerned me based on the experiences I read.
Well, I am now 12 days post-LIS and fissurectomy and I can tell you the diffrerence is night and day.
Coming home two hours after the operation I felt nothing. No pain or even discomfort, really. My guess was the anisthetic was still working in my system but I would soon feel the pain.
Thing is, it never really happened. I was sore, after all my flesh was cut and whatnot, but I never once felt pain as bad as it was before the surgeory. It took a while for my first post-op bowel movement (about three days) and I was a bit scared about going through with it.
I needn't have been.
It wasn't like it was before the fissure starting bothering me but it was a damn sight better than it was pre-surgeory.
I was given hydromorphone (Dilaudid) for pain but honestly, after the first day or two it simply wasn't necessary. I stopped taking pain meds (even ibuprofin and such) after three or four days. All and all it was far better than I had dared to hope.
My point, of course, is...have the surgeory and do it as quickly as possible!
As others have pointed out on this wonderful forum, people do tend to post negative experiences more than positive ones, so I thought it my duty to bring some good news to those suffering but apprehensive about LIS and especially, fissurectomy operations.
My surgeon was not even a colo-rectal speacialist--just a general surgeon (he said in Canada CRS' won't bother with you unless you have cancer or somehting serious like that--don't know how true that is but it's what he said).
Thankfully, Canada has national health care and I didn't have to pay for the operation (my heart goes out to those, mostly Americans it seems, who cannot afford insurance or the thousands of dollars the surgeory would cost), but I would say if you can afford it or have insurance, it is quite worthwhile.
In any case, I hope this may help persuede some who were putting off surgeory for fear of a painful recovery or even making things worse. The usual disclaimers apply, of course. This is one individual experience but my fissure was quite bad and now, it's all good. It'll still take a while to recover fully but I feel very much on the way.
All the best to everyone on the board and thanks to all the posters who have shared their tips and experiences. It was a great help to me and I hope this is a small repayment in some way.
Cheers,
FeelingGood
