GTN Question

Postby CrackinUp » 30 Jan 2013, 15:37

The forum search doesn't seem to work, so thought I would ask.
What time of day is bets to apply GTN?
My instructions say once every 12 hours, so does that relax my muscles all the time? Or is the effect better when first applied?
Today I applied around 9am after a BM and again at 9pm. I did wonder if it needs applied before a BM, and if so, how long before to prevent it from coming out!
Thanks in advance...

After this mornings BM I would agree with you! No blood though which I'm taking as a positive.

I disagree - GTN is designed to relax the sphincter and prevent spasming.
Spasms occur following a BM therefore in my experience it was better to use Lidocaine Gel before a BM to numb the pain a little and act as a lubricant. Then clean the area thoroughly before applying the GTN which will then have a stronger effect on the spasms.
If you apply the GTN before a BM some of this will be removed when passing a BM

I think I may have hit a eureka moment with the GTN... did anyone who actually got relief from GTN apply it to the "contracted bit" roughly an inch (maybe less) inside or just inside the anus as directed?
I don't think I've been doing it right as today has been much better! Also decided two applications with half the dosage on would be easier to manage and it was. I think I've been wasting part of the dosage.

Crackinup,
For the UK version (Rectogesic 0.4%) You need to apply the full dosage (about an 2.5cm in length) twice a day for it to be effective - smaller quantities should only be used if your headaches become unbearable.
The Cream is to be applied at the location of the inner sphincter which is approximately one inch inside. As a guide your finger should be inserted to the point of your first knuckle.
The best thing to do is to measure the correct quantity and place it on the end of your finger before inserting
So this is how I used to use it:
1. When I first wake up I rub Vaseline around the entrance to help lubricate things for my toilet visit
2. After the toilet visit I wipe with cotton wool dipped in warm water
3. I then jump in the bath for 20 minutes
4. When I am about to apply the GTN I place a mirror on the floor and squat above it as that way I can see exactly where I need to apply the ointment
5. I cover my smallest finger in cling film and put the whole dose on the end of my finger
6. I then slowly push the finger in up to my knuckle - as the GTN is on the end of my finger it acts as a lubricant when the finger is going in
7. I then lay down for 10 minutes in case of headaches or dizziness
I have read people say to just apply a small amount externally if it hurts too much however it does need to be applied internally to work correctly. Another way would be to place a small amount at a time on a cotton bud (Q-tip) and apply it internally that way.

I've not been using it properly Davo... no wonder it did nothing!! Sh*t!
When I said half the amount, what I do is put half a dosage in then the other half immediately after to minimise waste. I find the entire dollop a fair amount to hit the target in one go.
If I'd only used my brain instead of taking the instructions literally, I might have had a decent week last week!! AAAAARGH!
