Fissure Healed after 9 months

Postby bunky » 17 Mar 2013, 07:31

I have been suffering for about 9 months, but horribly for the past 2 months. It was at the point that I was taking percocet and lying in bed all weekend after sitting at work during the week. When my regular doc prescribed the nitroglycerin, she unfortunately did not explain to me how it really worked so when I used it i used it sporadically thinking it was for pain. After two trips to a colorectal specialist and having been in agony daily, he suggested I either have botox injections or surgery. Being afraid to have either, I decided to work diligently at using the nitroglycerin and sitz baths and water and fiber. i am thrilled to say that I have been pain free for over 1 week and have not had a single issue. I'm not sure which thing I did actually helped, but it may have been a combination of all. I used the nitro faithfully twice a day, did sitz baths before and after BMs (I think this was a huge help in relaxing muscles before a bm), starting taking probiotics and lastly starting using Miralax. It's like a miracle. I started feeling improvement internally but was still experiencing external pain which was quite uncomfortable. My doc suggested no toilet paper (wipes only) or I would use the sitz bath after; no soap (I've taken to using Johnson's baby wash in the shower) and keeping area dry (use a hair dryer after shower or cleansing) and keeping a stretched out cotton ball against your skin there 24-7. I admit it was a little uncomfortable at first, but I actually think it really helps with the irritation. I know that 1 week is not a cure, but I feel like if I keep up doing what I'm doing, I'm finally on the road to recovery. Hope this helps someone. Definitely used some tips on this site myself, so I'm sure you're like me and willing to try anything.

Congrats, sounds like great progress :)
How long time were you on nitro diligently before you were totally pain free?
Could you maybe describe the progress you went through when things got better. Like did the burning stop from day to day. Did the pain descreased gradually. And how about the spasms.
Reason Im asking, is because Im also ob nitro. 4 weeks tomorrow, but Im not sure if Im healing, or if its just going cronic.

I had originally gone to the colorectal guy end of Nov when he pretty much blew me off saying that it was just irritated skin and saw no signs of a fissure. i was so angry because I knew how much pain I was in daily and I was bleeding every time. I finally had to go back Feb 12 because the pain was becoming unbearable. He finally said oh yes you do have a fissure and was a completely different doctor that day. He said that if I had been using the nitro and it wasn't working then I would need either surgery or botox. I realized after reading a lot about this problem that I didn't realize just how the ntiro worked. So I started a month ago and did everything I said above. The pain decreased greatly by week 2 internally. I didn't feel like I was splitting open every time i went, but I was still experiencing a lot of external discomfort. It felt like a cut on the outside and i know I have a skin tag. it was still uncomfortable to sit. I then started the process with the baby wash and the cotton ball and again, the miralax and probiotics during the past 2 -3 weeks and it's amazing, I'm feeling absolutely no pain at all. I highly suggest the sitz bath before and after. What else are you doing to help? Are you using nitro 2 -3 times per day? By the way, i know my fissure was caused by a poor diet. I don't eat any fruits or veggies other than apples.

I use 1cm nitro 15 min before my morning BM, and shower afterwards. Dont have a sitzbath.
Then I apply either diltiazem or nitro after BM, and nitro again at 8pm.
I eat much heathier now, and take Husk twice daily. I also drink plenty of water, and stay away from red meat, and chicken. I have managed to keep my BM very soft and easy to pass without straining at all. I think my fissure was caused by spending too much time at the toilet, and straining.
I did improve somewhat after 2-3 weeks at nitro, but I still have burning and irritation. Maybe 3/10 on the painscale. Used to be 9/10. It also seems that my spasms are nearly gone, but the burn continues :(
But its been 1-2 weeks like this with no further improvement, so Im starting to think I might not be healing. Maybe its just my fissure thats turned cronic. I also have a sore bump at the fissure site.
It just seems like every other nitro guy are doing better than me...

JHH I think the burning can be a symptom of spasm, not sure why but I'm fairly certain I read that.

Hey Crackin! Hope you feel better today?
I used to get a golfball up the a$$ feeling, and assumed thats was what spasms felt like.

JHH You should definitely try the sitz bath, it gives immediate relief. Try to sit in it 15-20 minutes at a time. My mother had anal cancer so this was a huge help for her. She actually uses marine salt from the petstore. I just used epsom or just the plain water. Try it, I was wishing I had tried it alot earlier. I also had the sore bump and it seems to be going away. I also suggest the cotton idea if it's irritated externally at all. Doc also suggested kegel exercises.

I dont care about relief, I want healing!!!
Since my pain decreased to 3/10 I can manage it fine. Taking a sitzbath would be just as annoying as having to lie down. (when I have burning, I can lie down, hold apart my butcheeks and have the pain go away. Well almost)

Well i believe the sitzbath actually does help in the healing because it helps in relaxing the muscles and the muscle spasms are what cause the fissure in first place.
Good luck to you. Hope you're feeling well soon.
