Focus more on soluble fiber to keep stools soft. That's what I do. I drink plenty of water (morning, noon, and night), eat 2 prunes a day (one in the evening and one in the morning... can't tolerate any more than that or I get really bad intestinal cramps), and 2 tablespoons of olive oil at dinner time. I eat a lot of veggies and fruit, too. Oh yeah, and I eat a lot of pears (I love pears). This has kept my stools soft. I don't use stool softeners or Miralax (I rarely get constipated).
January 2013 - Diagnosed with fissure. Eventually turned chronic.
History of IBS and anxiety disorder, along with fear of using bathrooms other than my own caused it.
Tried Diltiazem, but eventually developed a rash.
LIS surgery scheduled August 26th.

Happy to help. : ) I've actually never tried fresh or dried figs before. I'm curious to try them, though, since I heard they're good for constipation. Apricots and raisins are good, too, from what I've heard.
I personally like pears and prunes the most. They work for me. I just wish I could tolerate more prunes. I think they're really yummy, but I get horrid cramps if I eat more than two at a time. Pears I don't have any issues with, though.

I would eat fresh if I lived in a place that could offer them, but alas they are dried. I often eat 2 after a meal, or before, or as a snack.

Apricots are good for making the consistency a little more firm (not hard, but it seems like they make it stick together so it's not too soft and separated). Raisins make it more soft (be careful about too many raisins). Both of them will make you have to go eventually. Figs I find are kind of in the middle, since they are less dense than apricots, but a lot of fiber. They have a lot of nutrients too.

It's great to hear these ideas! I have kept my stools softer for over a week and I'm finally having a let-up in pain during the am BM!!!! For me, backing off insoluble fiber, focusing on soluble fiber, and adding healthy oils have helped. I've stayed away from Miralax so far, but still take 1 Colace and a small amount of psyllium husk (once or twice daily). I tried a prune the other night--didn't like it, but may add these to cereal as someone else suggested. Of course, drinking plenty of water. I SO appreciate the ideas you all have posted! Image

I forgot to say that adding oil definitely helps, so I second that.
Sweet potatoes and brown rice make good consistent BMs too, especially with lots of oil!
