MAGNESIUM -- Overdose?? Help please!

Postby sk22 » 23 May 2013, 23:34

Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone has had this experience. I've been taking 1000mg of magnesium every day for the last 5 months. It's the best thing I've found for keeping stools soft and helping my af.
I woke up this morning, and out of nowhere, my left thigh and right foot were killing me. The other leg and foot were also in pain but not near as much. The pain is muscular, and if I rest and don't move, I can't really feel anything wrong.
Well I was just looking up my symptoms on webmd (hypochondriac here!) and lo and behold, apparently calcium deficiency (hypocalcaemia i believe) causes muscle cramps and can be caused by having too much magnesium. I haven't been drinking that much milk lately.
So basically now I'm freaking out thinking that I have overdosed on magnesium or have too little calcium and am experiencing hypocalcaemia. I also was put on diltiazem ointment a month ago and what a coincidence, you aren't supposed to take magnesium supplements with it!
I've taken 500mg of magnesium today but am not going to take anymore. I'm really worried that I've screwed something up here. But my symptoms are not as bad as they seem to be -- yes I have cramping in my left leg, right foot, and my right hand (when I type like I am now) but that's it. The symptoms for magnesium overdose and hypocalcaemia are more severe than what I have. I'm just really worried! My neck has also been stiff for like 3 days now but it's not as bad as it was yesterday.
I'm sorry I'm treating you guys as a doctor, but I am really in need of advice. Should I rush to the emergency room or just up my calcium and decrease my magnesium and see what happens?

Sk22,
Stop panicking first! Try to stop the net "diagnosing" (although I can be as bad! So totally understand where you're coming from.....)
This could be a totally unrelated and unlinked magnesium issue although noone can confirm this for you other than a medical specialist.
Book yourself in for an appointment and ask the question - I doubt that you have "overdosed" as such but it would be certainly worth having a chat with a GP as to what levels of Magnesium you should be taking and what is best for you.
All the very best and let us know how you get on :)

Thank you! I've calmed down a bit. I do have issues with anxiety so I recognized that maybe I was just overthinking things. It's just when I saw magnesium, low calcium, diltiazem and muscle cramps in the same article as being related, I kinda freaked.
I'm going to see how I feel in the morning, cut back on magnesium pills (because I can up my water intake and hopefully everything will still be fine). :)

Ok, now that you have calmed down I can write something. First and foremost magnesium helps to absorb calcium better. The best recommended dose to my knowledge is 1:1, that is one part of magnesium to one part of calcium, although the net approach seems to vary a lot and prefer the 2:1 version.
Magnesium supplement should be taken at night (I bet your online research must have already provided you with this vital information). However, 1000 mg is too much. Was your magnesium level that low in the blood? I don't think that ever happens. The RDA for adult magnesium intake is between 270 mg – 400 mg.
Well, anyway, you don't have to panic. Well I take that back... panicking actually has helped in this case:) because all that fear or anxiety has depleted your excess magnesium levels !
Actually, not drinking milk has also helped, because like i said, magnesium helps to absorb calcium. All that calcium if taken would have constipated you further.
So right now, just try to reduce the magnesium dose and you should feel fine. I take 250 mg in the night coz my blood test revealed "borderline" range. Also, my calcium intake is through vegetables only (i eat lots of broccoli) and fruits, which i think makes it a good balance.
Magnesium is the best supplement and thankfully the only thing that I am on right now, to avoid fissures. It does help to soften stools. However, your dose seems a bit higher. I think magnesium is fat-soluble and therefore may have been the cause for that adverse effect. Don't know for sure. Overdose can be also be detected when your BMs are loose or watery.
Anyway, right now, the only way to find out your magnesium level is to ask you this question "do you crave for chocolate?" No? Then your magnesium level is fine ! :D

Thanks for bringing this one up! :D

Oh man I crave chocolate every day too! I just had a hand full of dark chocolate covered almonds...and two pieces of chocolate. lol I don't eat milk chocolate though. I also supplement with magnesium but I take the homeopathic route, seems to be working well so far!
