Alcohol makes it worse?

Postby hootinannie » 20 Aug 2013, 23:16

The colo-rectal surgeon that I've been seeing has told me that I should never, EVER have a drink while trying to heal the fissure. I haven't had my glass of wine for 8 weeks now and I'm wondering if anyone else received this instruction. I just don't want to take a chance, but I haven't been getting any better without the alcohol either.
Maybe this is because of dehydration? It's not like I'm getting hammered every night, just like to enjoy a drink every now and then...

Oh I also miss my red wine like nobody's business! I've been told also to not drink alcohol and I've been too scared to try. Alcohol dehydrates you and makes your stools harder, I guess. I really miss it though wahhh

I'd suggest a Miralax/Metamucil/flaxseed cocktail. Surely we have some ingenious drink mixers on the forum.

Hmm maybe if I added a tbs of chia seeds to a glass of wine it might make a smooth outcome, I'm really contemplating doing this...lol

I've just healed from my second fissure in seven years. I'm going to post story when I'm more confident I'm not tempting Providence!
Anyway neither time has any health professional ever suggested abstinence and I have carried on as usual. What I have done is make sure I drink plenty of water before and after and if drinking wine I drink water at the same time as do the French. I don't think beer is very dehydrating unless you drink an awful lot.
Having a fissure is depressing enough without eliminating all of life's pleasures!

Hi all! I got an information from my CRS that alcohol is very bad for AF's, but... He said if I couldn't resist it's better to have one shot of strong alcohol instead of one big (0,5l.) beer. Beer increases your stool acidity. I had neither single beer for 3 weeks now nor a shot instead.
Please don't make me wrong, he didn't tell me to drink vodka Image
Didn't mention about wine. I asked him only about a beer.

Mmmmmm, a wine smoothie. That's enough to turn me off of alcohol permanently!! You folks are hilarious! Just got my first bag of organic flax seeds and will be grinding some up shortly. Maybe they would go well with the wine?

How about flax beer, let's open a distillery and make some beer, do miss my Newcastle beer, it's only 4.7% alcohol..boo hoo.
I have a bottle, unopened of kosher wine, very sweet, was given to me, can't have it now, maybe I will give it to my sister, the Jewish holiday's are coming up.
I will take hooties recipe for a Wine smoothie..lol.

I've never been told to stay away from alcohol although I did when I was in a lot of pain because I was on strong painkillers. When things got better I started drinking red wine again. I find my stools are softer when I drink. I can't see an odd gls or two of wine would harm you. As pompeyblue says having a fissure is depressing enough without eliminating all of life pleasures 😊
