Fissure? Dr's can't find anything wrong with me

Postby Moogdog2013 » 27 Oct 2013, 12:10

Hi all

I'm hoping someone out there can help me. I've been suffering from discomfort for over a year now following a small hemorhoid which healed ages ago. I've visited the Dr's several times now, and seen two specialists, and although I can feel pain/discomfort in my anus, the Dr's can't see anything wrong. The last specialist speculated that the area could be sensitive now due to the trauma of the hemorhoid and possible past fissure, and that I somehow aggregate it now and again which causes the pain to flare up. I'm really at my wits end now. I've tried all sorts of lotions including Rectogesic, I eat lots of fibre, take Fybogel twice a day etc, and yet somehow I get these reoccurring flare ups which can last weeks I can't even really describe the pain. It doesn't feel like a burning / stabbing pain, it's just this nagging discomfort that makes me feel awful. At times it almost feels like someone is stretching the muscle down there - like arubber band that is waiting to snap. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this pain, and how/why it flares up from time to time? Also is it possible that the medication is aggravating things?

Thanks

Hi there

Sorry about your situation, but welcome to the forum!

Sometimes a fissure can be hard to see even for a doctor. Have you had a colonoscopy?
Maybe your doctors are right, and there really is nothing to see. Sometimes people who heal from hemorrhoids and fissures, still have issues for a long time after, and I think it could be caused by scartissue or damaged nerves. It should then get better with time, but there are no guarantee.

It could also be levator ani syndrome, but Im sure the doctors should be able to confirm this, if thats the case.

On a final note, yes, medication can aggrivate things. After 3 months on rectogesic, I started having trouble. It was another pain than the fissure, and was more outside. Eventually I developed some kind of rash, and figured it was best to stop all ointments. Took a week time for the rash to clear.

I hope you figure out what you are up against. Good luck!

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to reply. I often wonder whether it is a fissure, but thankfully my symptoms don't seem to match those referred to by fissure sufferers. My pain/discomfort I suppose you'd describe as relatively
mild, but it is constant, and very irritating. What frustrates me the most is that because I don't really know what is causing the pain I don't know what to do to make it go away. I also find it very difficult to describe the pain/discomfort and where it's coming from. Anyway sorry to moan.

I know it's been a while but I am going through the same thing; I've been seen by 5 different doctors and have been told repeatedly that my fissure has healed. I was very confused a month ago because I felt as though I had no answers how could it be that I have pain (different type if pain that the fissure) and no fissure. I'm trying to get information from others who are suffering just like me!
2/14 Fissure developed
3/14 Diagnosed w/ fissure given Nifedipine
4/14 Referred to Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy=Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
5/14 Fissure declared "healed"/chronic anal pain persists
