My Post-Sphincterotomy Recovery

Postby Deleted User 3438 » 12 Feb 2014, 17:31

Hello everyone, I got my first fissure when I was about 5 months into college. I had no idea what I was experiencing when I first started experiencing sharp pains in my butt. I figured it was just something that would pass over. But months passed by and I still experienced that terrible pain. I could hardly walk to my classes, I was depressed and I would cry about it to my mom, and it was all I could think about. After speaking about it with my mom she believed that eating the bad college food led to constipation and eventually the creation of a fissure that caused the pain I was experiencing. I had tried to heal it on my own, but the pain only got worse. i couldn't hang out with my friends anymore or workout if I wanted, I could only just sit there. I felt like I was wasting away. But then my mom couldn't stand to see how miserable I was and scheduled me an appointment with an anal specialist. I was really nervous and scared. She prescribed me a paste to put in my anus twice a day. I actually felt better and could start exercising and enjoying life again. But soon I felt the pain come back and I became so upset and thought that I'd never be normal again. That's when I decided to move forth with the sphincterotomy, which took place in October 2013. It was a rough first few weeks, I felt like I would die every time I had a bowel movement. But now here I am today at 4 months post-surgery. I am feeling WAY better than I ever thought I would have, I was a little discouraged at first but I can feel the progress. I have learned that I cant go out and start walking right after I have a bowel movement, I have to wait a while to recover from it and then I feel great again. I still have pain, I just hope that the pain continues to decrease as the months go by. I've learned to eat better and stay away from fried foods- eat more vegetables and fruits! Well, there's my story! I would like anyone to post their recovery journeys or any advice that you have for me. How did you feel at 4 months post-surgery? Thanks for reading!

Hi Coconut, thanks for your story!
I'm glad you feel that you are recovering. Yes, it can take a very long time to get completely better.
I have not had surgery. I think I've had about 4 months of being healed using nitroglycerine, but still have the occasional discomfort. The last couple of weeks have been much better though.

Have you been back to see your CRS to have your healing checked?
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

Thanks for replying, and I'm glad that you are feeling better as well. Surgery was such a pain. I have not seen her since the 2 month mark. She said that I was all healed at that point. I was a little confused because I still felt some pain, I guess I assumed that the healing period would be quick, but I still have some ways to go. The next time I see her will be at the one-year mark from my surgery, which will be October 2014. I really hope to be at least 85% better than I am now, I'll be so devastated if I'm not! I have good and bad days, I just wish the bad days were no longer existent.

These fissures really are awful! I am so glad you are feeling better! Mine is better, but I think I have a smallish fistula, which is a story for another forum. Not to worry, this seems to be a minor problem compared to the pain of that fissure. It was horrible, talk about pain during driving!! And my job is comprised of like 1/3 driving. College is supposed to be a time of growth and I can't imagine dealing with this. I guess it is a way of growing, but not the way you imagined!

Hi everyone, I had an acute fissure for 5 months. The cream and Botox did not work so I had a sphincterotomy 2 weeks ago. 1 week of pain and painful BM, but pain meds helped with that. I feel like a new person. No pain and no incontintence. I highly recommend the surgery

Hi Everyone,

I am 30 yr old female with no kids yet. I suffered from acute anal fissure for nearly 2 months. my life got struck... pain during BM and after and it lasted till 3 in the afternoon or 6 in the evening when pain is more. i tried everything... 3 glasses of fiber (metamucil) a day, laxative once a day, drinking more water, high fiber diet , stool softners, and nothing worked... My CRS gave some pain med and gel and valium... i took pain meds everyday for a month and used the cream and valium tablets...but no improvement. So finally went to LIS on 19 nov ie 2 days back.

Recovery:

i still feel the pain during BM and i take sitz bath. pain is now something different to what i had earlier... not sure if this is surgery pain.my concern is ..i am still having large stool and it hurts coming out. Is this because of fiber i take which makes the stool bulky and makes hard to come out. i am concerned about my large stool. if the stool is small and less... my ass wont hurt i guess. Any suggestions on how can make my stool soft and easy to come out.

I'm having the operation within the next few weeks. My CRS's recovery instructions include milk of magnesia, which really helps move the bowels and make very soft bm's. I hadn't taken any before, and since I bought this month in preparation I've used it a few times esp as with my nervousness of impending operation I'm a bit constipated. In a word: effective!
