General or IV Sedation for surgery

Postby Broncosgirl » 29 Mar 2015, 16:08

Hi All,
My doctor is giving me the option of doing either a general anesthesia or IV sedation for my LIS surgery Tuesday. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts/experiences/opinions on this.

IV sedation is safer, and doesn't cause as much long term brain damage, but I've had IV sedation twice for colonoscopies, and woke up in the middle both times. I wouldn't want to wake up and move at the wrong moment during LIS though, so I would choose the general (I didn't have the option myself, and had general for my LIS, btw).

I would choose general as well. I also had sedation during a colonoscopy and woke up during. There are definitely risks to the general but I couldn't mentally handle knowing what was going on down there.

I had IV, it had propafal (I'm sure that's not the right spelling) in it. I had it for a colonoscopy before and didn't wake up so I felt comfortable with it. It was easy to wake up from. Good luck!

Oops! Should have checked the date on your post, obviously you already made the choice and had the surgery. I'll check your other thread and see how things are going.

I had a spinal with LIS and again with the flap surgery. Worked great.
