Conclusions: The findings of this study coupled with the consideration of clinical observations impel one to consider that anal papillae are neither normal anatomic structures nor developmental variations of the normal, but rather that they are vestiges of the anal plate or acquired structures.
Be they vestiges or acquired structures or a combination of both, their enlargement appears to be caused by an inherent hypertrophic response of the modified ectoderm and its supporting tissue to irritation, injury or infection.
The termhypertrophied anal papillae merely denotes a relative increase in size, not a definite size. Essentially, all papillae are hypertrophied.
