I tried Preparation H cream in the UK which I believe has witch hazel in it, plus I tried the distilled (I think it's called) witch hazel liquid on cotton wool. They're meant to be good for itching I think and Preparation H is really for hems. If you have itching rather than pain it might work better.
I think mine was too far gone for the witch hazel to have any effect.
I seem to remember reading online somewhere that some people had a 'burning' reaction to it,
so perhaps someone else will have a better reply than me.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I haven't tried Witch Hazel, but now use Chamomile ointment which is renowned for it's healing properties, besides this I also use Petroleum jelly, both of them I use inside and out with good results.
