Additives in foods

Postby guiness » 15 Jun 2013, 07:10

Some processed foods, crackers chips have an ingredient list a mile long....all stuff added to the foods to get them to be a certain texture, stay "fresh" and yes...binding agents to keep the cracker a crunchy shape and not crumble apart in the package. They are also added to packaged bread, candy whatever. So even if the package says healthy and high fiber.... Beware

I mean beware of the additives in foods that claim to be healthy but still have an ingredient list a mile long.
Like high fiber thomas's english muffins for instance. Are they really healthy? Do the "fake fiber" additives act like real fiber once in the body, or does a food with lots of high fructose corn syrup with added fiber equal health food now?

I'm still not sure what you think you/we need to "beware" of? Many CRS and G.I. doctors recommend synthetic fiber supplements, which are also contained in many foods as additives. Just because there are a lot of ingredients in a food doesn't automatically make that food unhealthy. I think you need to be careful about making general statements without offering any evidence to back it up.

I still love crisps and crackers, but try to aim for organic. Don't much go for anything with corn syrup it it and do tend to read labels when food shopping and do my own research into what I am eating. If I saw some cake (muffin or whatever) which had one of its ingredients listed as a synthetic fibre, I would not be buying it. Call me old fashioned, but when something labeled as a fibre muffin, I expect it to be a natural fibre.
