Are seeds a no-no?

Postby Luka » 22 May 2013, 13:38

I've been reading a lot about nutrition lately, especially about magnesium and how it can help stress and muscle tension. I've read it's good to prevent constipation, too. Pumpkin seeds are pretty high in magnesium and I was wondering if anyone eats these? Are all seeds a no-no with a fissure? Mine is healing, so I don't want to cause any issues like a re-tear. I have a bag of pumpkin seeds/pepitas (without the shells) and they seem very soft and easy to chew. I eat pecans, pistachios, and walnuts sometimes and don't have any issues, so I'm not sure why seeds would be a problem.
Do any of you eat any other seeds?

History of IBS and anxiety disorder, along with fear of using bathrooms other than my own caused it.
Tried Diltiazem, but eventually developed a rash.

Hi Luka,
Nuts are fine for me if well chewed, especially the ones you mention - love them.
I am really wary of seeds however because when I have eaten these in the past with a very sore fissure, I could actually "feel" them passing by the fissure to the extent that I was concerned they could tear it. It may you are absolutely OK eating them but I avoid them now, especially pumpkin and sunflower seeds. I also had a similar experience with seeded bread, so personally, I just don't eat these anymore.
I convince myself I'm getting my Magnesium through large amounts of dark chocolate these days (LOL!).....

Thanks for the reply, Ever the Optimist. : ) I think I will just eat the pumpkin seeds in moderation. I had some the other day (chewed them up really well) and didn't have any issues. I was just wondering if others had any issues with seeds and apparently some people do. It seems like smaller seeds cause more issues though. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how it seems from what I've read.
Sadly, I can't eat dark chocolate anymore due to my acid reflux. : ( It really makes me sad since I was a HUGE chocoholic before. Not sure what happened since I was fine for years and was never bothered by it, but then all of a sudden I got really bad acid reflux issues last year (enough to burn my sinuses!). I'm really scared to try chocolate again, so I just don't eat it anymore. It's really difficult, though. : (
I would just take magnesium supplements, but those pills are freaking huge! Yikes. No way would I swallow those. I hate swallowing pills in general, but horse pills are a big no-no for me.

Luka,
You can buy a magnesium drink... It's called natural calm. I have used it in the past. You only need a small amount, as it does have a stool softening effect.

I don't think seeds are considered a no-no unless you have diverticulitis. However, if you notice irritation from them, might as well avoid for now. I eat high-fiber bread with seeds and don't notice a particular problem from that. I am avoiding popcorn (which I love but the husks can be irritating to pass and my naturopath specifically avised against it). Good luck! :)
