Bananas? Yes or no?

Postby butthurt2013 » 13 Nov 2013, 19:20

There seems to be conflicting information about eating bananas in relation to AF's and Hems. I've read to eat one on an empty stomach every day in the morning, and I've read never to eat them as well. Anyone have some science to contribute? Personally, I like to eat a banana every day but not if it's gonna keep me from healing.
Thanks in advance!

Yes I noticed that too butthurt2013

But the conflicting info may stem from the simple fact that
bananas may clog some more than others. For me they really
never gave me problems and I eat them all the time. Here's some
science to contribute....click to view

Remember it's the insoluble fiber that produces the large
harder stools.

So with almost twice as much insoluble fiber, yes bananas can give
people problems especially the more unripe they are and
consuming them everyday as you say you want to.

Want more comparison like this of soluble vs insoluble; here's the original site...

Better still here's an excel spreadsheet of that same info in a much
more user friendlier format, thanks to soffiler.

I must say I have tried eating bananas, and then not eating bananas, and I have never noticed any difference to be honest.

This is very telling, and enough for me to avoid them for now. My breakfast is typically Wheatgrass and maybe some yogurt now anyway, I don't get hungry for hours after drinking the grass...

For me, I used to eat 2-3 per day and never had issue with them. I love bananas. Not sure if they are constipating per say, I think if you drink a lot of water along with them, they shouldn't be too bad. I noticed if anything they used to make me a bit gassy, which can help pass stools sometimes to get graphic.

Now, I eat Raisin Bran, or Frosted Mini Wheats, (Fiber One is nasty) coffee, orange juice, whole grain toast, a banana sometimes, sometimes an apple. Sometimes two over easy eggs. Love bacon but avoiding it for now since it's hard.

I'm taking a daily stool softener also so not as afraid of one banana per day.

Love bananas. I fry mine in olive oil with chopped mango and add a little cane sugar. Have this just about every day.

Im a big fan of bananas and eat 1-2 a day. I dont think they are doing anything bad for my digestion in any way.
Also, they contain about 350 mg of Potassium pr 100 g - a lack of this nutrient (can happen from exercise/sweating for a prolonged period of time) will make your body extract it from feces, which will dry them up.

interesting topic..I have a half a banana when I make my healthy shake...but it must be a very ripe banana, My Doctor explained to me, its the tannans in an Unripe banana that does the constipating, think of leather and tannans, it tightens up the leather to make a purse, well those same tannans will tighten up your colon and cause problems.

As long as the Banana is very ripe, I,m ok with a banana a week, But of course every one is different. So I would suggest gradually try it.

Totally agree with PGA - Always ripe and never when green on skin.
I don't eat so many these days myself but do love boiled bananas - yummy. :)
