Colours of Poop :)

Postby SunshineHope » 07 Jan 2008, 18:26

:hi: everyone.
I was wondering if anyone knows what the colours of our poop symbolize. I know it sounds like a mood ring but what I mean is, sometimes our poo can be very dark, sometimes quite light like a baby's. Does anyone have any idea? I've noticed that when I've been eating more healthy, balanced meals my poop colour is lighter.
Why do babies poo green?
Thanks and happy 2008 :_): Image :tuv:

It has a lot to do with what we are eating. I eat a lot of blueberries so yes, my poop looks dark blue! My daughter ate a lot of pumpkin bread one day and her poop was orange. I believe the color of the poo is also based on the amount of bile produced.

Babies who poop green may be formula fed? I don't know-mine had mustard yellow poop.

hehehe I eat a lot of pickled beetroot and very often get a scare :)
babies who poop green have usually had too much to eat, sometimes it's the sign of an infection. My son had milk intolerance and his were grey...weird.
I eat low sugar baked beans every day, so I get a lot of orange poop as well.

Actually, the color of your poop can be a significant indicator of your health. If it stays any color other than brown for more than a few days, you should definitely have it checked out, unless you are certain it is a food color from your diet...

if you stool is pale, it is a sign ofliver problems--to much bile salts left over. i forgot exactly what green is supposed to signify--also a liver problem.
that said, milk products turn my poo pale. And if I eat spinach I get green poo.

Kim, do you have any other links or advice about that? For me it's like sometimes I have very dark stool (moreso when I'm eating unhealthy or not enough water maybe?? ) and lately it's been lighter than normal. I'm just wondering if it could mean something. My poo usually isn't changed when I eat spinach.. Just trying to figure out if it could be something health related.

Unless poop is VERY dark brown - to black ( which means internal bleeding),
or is so pale that is almost white (that means liver problem), you don't have to worry about color, especially if you have no other symptoms , like runny BM, or nausea or feel ill in general.
My babies were bottle fed , yet they never had green poop ...

Sunshine,
Here's a great link to a Mayo Clinic page about stool color and health...
