Help, advice and am I alone?

Postby CannonBall » 21 May 2016, 04:16

Firstly, I cant believe it has come to this. I have been lurking for some time and read stories and thought 'Wow atleast I dont have it as bad as some people on here'

But here I am practically in tears and worn out after what should be a simple bowel movement.

So this has been going on for nearly a year on and off now, there has always been blood on the tissue paper etc but recently... Well... Its been complete carnage.

The past week bowel movements have been a rather medieval affair, hence my username choice. Each bm has felt like a cannonball being passed through keyhole. I have the urge the go, so as I am sitting there thinking the urge is real, i then realise it was all just a trap. Now there I am stuck with a bowel movement the size of cannonball almost being launched from my colon.

But it never fires, the struggles are real. Im wiggling, kicking my legs, sweating. I stand up thinking it was a lie but then I realise i still need to pass this bm.

After 15-20 minutes of torture it gets set free. What a relief, I look to see my triumph but I am left with a blood filled bowel of disappointment at a mere marble sized accomplishment.

What is going on?!

A little history, I have seen a specialist who has provided me with Diltiazem which I thought was working for the past 2 months. I had a Colonoscopy last week, which I believe has irritated my fissure. Nothing has felt this bad before in the past year.

To sum up. Every Bowel Movement feels huge and gets stuck upon leaving, not sure if this is constipation or a symptom of an anal fissure. Once the BM has left I literally have toilet paper covered in blood. Not a streak, the whole paper.

Not sure, what I am hoping for here, I just wanted to vent to hopefully make myself feel better.

Cannonball -- Welcome to the forum...and no, you are not alone. Sorry to hear of your struggles...no fun to say the least. Lets try and end this cannonball run you are on....here are some thoughts and ideas:

Make sure you are eating a good amount of fiber each day 25-30 grams and make sure you get a lot of soluble fibre. A buddy of mine who described his movements like yours had a ton of success using wheat bran fiber -- he would sprinkle it on everything he ate, made muffins etc...helped him a lot. Don't overdo the fibre though because it can bulk you up if you go overboard.

Second most important -- specially if you are adding fiber -- drink a ton. 8 glasses a day...if you can do 10 all the better. You need to make sure that the stuff going through your system is water filled and soft.

Third -- try using a softener like Miralax...many have had great success with this.

Fourth -- try lubricating with either vaseline or coconut oil up there...help things slide out easier

Fourth -- add a tablespoon of coconut or olive oil to your diet a couple or a few times a day...lubricate in and out.

Fifth -- are you taking a sitz bath or bath after your bm....may help with pain and keeping the place clean.

Keep us posted

My heart goes out to you. Here's what I'm currently doing:

Miralax, one dose at bedtime. You may need two doses, one in the morning and one in the evening in the beginning. Definitely introduce fiber slowly. Some people find that too much fiber while taking Miralax bulks them up too much, so just take it easy and see what works for your body.

I take 50mg of zinc and 400mg of vitamin E with dinner and 1000mg of vitamin c with breakfast...and right when i get up i take 400mg of magnesium citrate. My muscles used to be very tight and I have read that magnesium helps relax muscles even the sphincter (hopefully it'll help aid the healing process). Im thinking of adding fish oil or olive oil to my morning routine as well. It doesn't hurt to take a vitamin b complex and a good multiple vitamin.

I have bought a 2 liter sized jug and make sure I drink it all and maybe a little more.

I've been taking a sitz bath with 1/3 - 1/2 cup of Epsom salt with a squirt of hydrogen peroxide after every bm. I eyeball the amount, honestly. I've heard some people bm in the sitz bath because the warm water helps relax the sphincter. Try that. Who cares if it's gross, as long as you heal!

I put zinc ointment 20% on my whole sphincter especially by the fissure. It helps aid healing, has natural antibiotic features and it helps heal scarring. All around good for your skin and healing process. I sometimes switch between my zinc and my prescribed nifedipine ointment.

I've stocked up on moist wipes, haven't used toilet paper on the bum in forever.... and I prop my feet on a little foot stool every time I go.

Please try miralax first, buy the generic as it is less expensive or costco has a good deal on the bulk version.

Be well, and know you are not alone!! :hugs:

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, the past month and more since I have posted have been some of the best.

Taking Movicol and Diltiazem has helpf and drinking alot of water. I still feel a bit on edge that it could tear at any momrnt but maybe thats just in the back of my mind.

I did have Botox injections yesterday under general aneasthetic, so hopefully this gets rid of the issue for good!
