Magnesium supplement- brand and dosage

Postby SSK » 27 Mar 2014, 15:30

Hi everyone,

I need to solve my problem of hard stool in the beginning and I read a bit about Magnesium pills.
Could you please help me with the dosage of Magnesium you take? Is there a particular brand you prefer?

I read an article posted here a while ago that for 19-30 year old about 310 mg is the amount of Mg needed in diet+supplements. I figure I could start with a 250 mg pill at night after dinner?

Has anyone had any adverse effects from it?

Thanks for your advice!

Hi SSK,
I take Magnesium, it's called Doctors Best, Chelated magnesium. My understanding is that the Chelated Magnesium is best absorbed by the body. I take 4 a day, and I find it really helps. I order them from Amazon UK. They are expensive, but it's worth paying a bit more for a decent tablet. Start with 2 initially if you're worried. I take Movicol too, both things aid in the smooth BM department. I also take Vit C, which also helps with digestion. It may take a while for it to work, so I would consider taking stool softener too if you have problems with hard stools and constipation. Good Luck. X

Hi SSK,

I take magnesium glycinate, which I had read is better absorbed. I take two pills of 150 mg so that's 300 mg per day. I take it in the evening, The brand I get is called Designs for Health, I order it off amazon.

I also use miralax, which has been a huge help.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I tried taking a magnesium tablet (250mg) at bedtime everyday for a week and things were going fine. This last weekend though, I had diarrhea (not too bad, but I went 4 times in the day which is not normal for me) and I can only chalk it up to the magnesium pill. Nothing in my food looked suspicious so I have now stopped taking it completely. Things are still fine but I am prone to get that initial hard stool once a month out if no where. I would assume that is completely normal for a fissure-less person but for me it is death! I was looking for alternatives other than miralax, which is great but I don' t want to depend on a laxative forever, so my search is still on after the magnesium failure.

I would say you have to be careful if you drink alcohol on magnesium as for me I notice my stools are a lot runnier after drinking and having mag.

I wouldn't disregard it as its been a life line to me. Maybe slowly re introduce it every other day then every day. I am sitting happy at 250g per day before bed.

Magnesium citrate is amazing. I take 2 tablets of solgar magnesium citrate with dinner plus one miralax and everyday my stool is lovely and soft :)

I'm taking Puritan's Pride Magnesium Citrate 200mg 2x a day. It made my bm soft and thin. One thing I've noticed is I'm having hard time gaining weight. I'm trying to gain the weight I lost since my first AF.
