Miralax or Metamucil??

Postby Deleted User 4096 » 25 Mar 2015, 16:13

I had a fistulotomy today.

Before the surgery the CRS fellow said to take the prescribed Docusate and then in a few days take Miralax or Restoralax.

When being released, the nurse said to start taking Metamucil right away.

The discharge papers say "Use dose of Metamucil daily as directed by over the counter bottle." It doesn't say when to start.

The Docusate says to take 1 tablet 3 times daily as needed for constipation.

So what do I do???

Miralax is a stool softener and Metamucil is fibre. I have not had the surgery, so hope that someone who has will come in and advise. All I can say is that often after surgery, the anesthesia and pain medication can make things work slowly and you can become constipated which you want to avoid. If you take Metamucil, make sure you drink a large glass of water with each dose. I wish you well in your healing.
