no miralax or movical in Canada

Postby workingonit » 31 Jan 2012, 19:28

Hey there,
I am doing OK still without it, but had always thought if I ever needed it...
But when I checked at the local drugstore, there was only ducolase type stuff and senna.
Does anyone know if polyethylene glycol 3350 is available in Canada. Maybe it is only by prescription?
That would suck.

Hey workingonit, Restorlax is the same company and compound as Miralax.
I just purchased 1 bottle from Walmart (7 serving for $9). You can also get it from Shoppers Drug Mart and London Drugs.
Good luck and keep in touch to see if it's any good.

Thanks Toothdoctor!
Kinda pricey though if you want to use it long term though...
maybe just for backup (no pun intended) and after surgery.

Hey workingonit,
So I took some Restorlax last night. I used about half the recommended scoop. The entire night I was very very thirsty. This morning I was bloated (even though they said it would not cause bloating). This afternoon I had a BM and it was very midly more soft.
Only 1 day of use, but so far I'm not overly impressed. I wasn't expecting a miracle, but at least they should have the side effects that the specifically said they DO NOT cause.
I have also tried Docusate and it seemed to have worked better.
Tonight I will use the full recommended dosage and I will keep you posted.

Hey Toothdoctor,
Maybe try drinking a lot of water when you take it?
I read that it works by bringing more water into the colon, so like fiber, it probably means you need to increase your water intake. Don't know if that would improve the bloating though.

Miralax was awful for me. I know most people on this forum swear by it, but it really made me thirsty (no amount of water would quench the thirst), gave me this horrible feeling in my bowel like a violent washing machine was in there, and in order to take enough of it to have any effect at all, I ended up in the bathroom most of the day with burning stools.
Stool softeners taken with meals in divided doses spread out during the day, lots of water, fiber, and something like prunes/prune juice or dried figs seem to be working best for me.

Okay Day2 of Miralax / Restoralax and things are not working so well.
It made me very very thirsty the entire Day 2, and only early Day 3 I had a huge diarrhea that caused my anal fissure to RIP OPEN. There was a lot of blood on the TP, and now my anus feels as painful as the first week of the initial tear.
My warning is USE WITH CARE. If you do not have constipation, then this can actually cause diarrhea.
I USED ONLY 1 TEASPOON which is less than the recommended amount.
I also bloating and cramping.
USE WITH CAUTION!!!

Update: so the Restoralax made me diarrhea and I felt a lump in my anus. I looked in the mirror and it seems an external hemorrhoid developed from the pressure of the diarrhea.
I used AnuZinc HC and it seemed to have calmed things down moderately.
Lesson learned is to use Restoralax with caution.
As well, use a lower dose first then slowly increase so you don't end up with diarrhea.
I'm a 180lbs man and I used 1 TEASPOON and it caused diarrhea.

I am so sorry it did that to you TD!
I believe jr said it has this effect on her as well.
Weird how it is so effective for some...
I am fairly sensitive to drugs etc, so I think I will stick to prune juice, magnesium, metamucil and olive oil. Sounds like a lot, but I haven't had blood in a few days. The real test of course, will be my next period.
I wonder if guys tracked the times they get some blood on the tp if it would correlate to a monthly cycle?
Feel better TD!

ToothDoctor...
I am so sorry to hear about your setback. I know the Miralax was a disaster for me and caused a huge setback for me as well. I hope things settle down quickly and you are able to find a routine that works for you. Everyone is so different. One person's miracle can be another person's misery.
Wishing you a more comfortable day today.
