Movicol Question

Postby Phil McCrackin » 31 Dec 2013, 03:34

Hi Everyone,

I just tried Movicol for the first time. I put two teaspoons (half a sachet) into 125ml of water, and about an hour later had a bowel movement going from a number 4-5 ending with a mushy 6 (Bristol Chart). Now my butt is really burning and irritated from the fissure pain. It probably won't settle down for 4 hours or so.

Did anyone else experience mushy stool using Movicol, and did it gradually improve? I know people on the forum have been using it for months. But mushy stool is something that irritates my fissure as much as passing a hard stool. I also have Crohn's and have always been prone to constipation and not diarrhoea. And the specialist said the fissure doesn't seem to be Crohn's related. Well I haven't had a flare for 8 years or so. And he's the one who suggested that I use Movicol.

I'm also feeling nauseous from the artificial lemon and lime flavouring. Maybe my system is too sensitive for this stuff.. Not sure whether to throw it out or persist with it.

Cheers!

Re: "Anusol Zinc Suppositories" & Movicol Question

Hi there

When I used movicol, I also had mushy bristol 6 BMs. It was great for my fissure though, and Im still aiming for bristol 6 now Im healed. Movicol also made me nausiated, so I had to stop it and use lactulose instead.

Re: "Anusol Zinc Suppositories" & Movicol Question

Hi!
I used cream for baby diper rash which has similar active ingredients zinc oxyde, bismuth subgalate, lidocaine tanine and some chamomile extract. Many times it helps with burning and pain. I applied it on the outside and about 1 cm inside. I think supositories stay far to high and fissures are a bit lower, so maybe better to use a cream. My CRS told me that zinc oxyde and bismuth subg. should be o.k. for fissures. If you have not tried zinc oxyde yet, I would say give it a chance. Hope it helps.
I tried so many things that I do not know what really helped me.
Disabling burning, drilling pain in anal area for almost a year, started after UT infection. Small anal fissure diagnosed, turned out it is probably not the cause of pain, MRI shows no inflammation or fistula. Grateful to forum members for support.

Movicol Question

Postby Phil McCrackin » 31 Dec 2013, 18:01

@rio: Yes, I think the zinc cream may be a better option. I tried a suppository last night and it was so painful going in, and did little in relieving symptoms. And the fissure is really low and not too big so I can put the cream directly on it. Thanks.

@JHH: I'm surprised the mushy stool (6) was good for your fissure. I have mushy stool quite often but it seems to really burn and aggravate the fissure. I really don't know why. I haven't tried lactulose yet but after the first dose of Movicol I'm thinking of quitting it. It also gave me stomach cramps. If I manage to drink 3 litres of water a day it usually keeps things soft. Do you know of anything else that is natural (not chemical based) and is easy on the system for softening stools apart from psyllium husk?

Hi phil..... I too will be "celebrating" 3 miserable fissure years in February. :(

Have you tried magnesium to soften stools?? A quick search on here will tell you what type, and how much to use. Also, as JHH suggests, lactulose seems to be a good choice ... I used it myself for the first year or so.

Hi Phil.

I just want to add that it wasn´t the Movicol that made your stools too soft. It takes way longer than one hour for it to do its thing.

@OMB: Sorry to hear you've been dealing with a fissure for 3 years too! It drives me insane sometimes. Have you ever considered surgery or are you still hopeful that it can heal naturally? I'm still trying everything to heal it naturally, but it's so persistent that I'm starting to think it's impossible now. Over the 3 years I've only experienced a few months where I thought it had finally healed, but it always comes back. I haven't tried magnesium yet, but I'll look into it now. Thanks.

@LostForWords: It might not have been the Movicol, but it was strange that after drinking it I had to run to the bathroom not long afterwards. Maybe I'll try it before going to bed next time. And because of the Crohn's my system is very sensitive to anything new coming in, so maybe that had something to do with it. Cheers.

Not much to add to the already good advice above. You can also try taking less Movicol until you achieve a more comfortable stool consistency for you. Fissures are definitely strange things. What works for some people doesn't for others. The nice thing though about powdered or liquid products is you can easily keep adjusting up or down depending on your own reactions. Generally speaking, the Movicol shouldn't have worked that quickly, but definitely your Crohn's could have impacted things and it could have had a speedier effect for you than what most people experience.

Phil,
Do/ can you eat prunes? I find the soft ones in tinned natural juices incredibly helpful - 4/5 of them in the evening followed by a Magnesium supplement seems to work wonders on soft stools for me.
Try taking Zinc as a separate supplement too - Again, for me, it's one supplement I can't live without and particularly helpful at strengthening immunity generally and assisting in wound repair. :)
Chronic Fissure diagnosed December 2011
Healed by Diltiazem around Feb 2013
Anal Fistula followed burst abscess in June 2012
2 internal troublesome piles remain & suspected, but undiagnosed, ongoing Levator Ani type symptoms & flare-ups

@Ever The Optimist: I've only ever tried prune juice, which really upset my stomach. But I'll try eating one and see what happens.

So I started taking Movicol before bed (1 teaspoon) and for the last two days I've had a BM just after getting up in the morning. But just before the BM I'm getting intense cramps in my lower left abdomen, but the BM is painless and then the cramps are gone. Yesterday I had a type 4 (sausage) which was great (apart from the cramps) but today the beginning was a type 2 (bunch of grapes and some round droppings) followed by a normal type 4. But the type 2 still seemed soft and the BM was painless. Anyway, has anyone experienced lower abdominal cramps taking Movicol? It would be a shame to stop taking it because it seems to be helping so far.
