Ice vs. heat

Postby sweetpea » 23 Jun 2014, 23:25

I am doing what i can to recover from my AF... i seem to be better than last week..; so maybe slow progress.

however, i still find that ice (sitting on a soft cool substance) is much easier than heat most of the time, unless i am taking a hot tub or sitz bath.

is there any reason to be alarmed? i am following my body's signals here. of course i'd rather have heat but the heat packs seem to flare out my pain.

many thanks

I have read in discharge notes for any anal surgery that some offices/surgeons recommend ice. I've googled quite a few for ideas too! :)
My CRS never said anything about it but I've tried it a few times now post my fistula surgery. I would say as long as you are taking your baths, which opens up the blood capillaries to bring blood flow to that area, its not such a bad thing if you feel it helps.

I was told to use ice packs in first 24 hours or so, like 4 or 5 times. at 10 minutes each time. That is when most swelling will occur I guess, of course if it feels good I can't think of any problems with it. As for heat through this whole ordeal, I have not been able to tolerate heat much, even heated seats in car would bother me. I think pain meds help the most. I am doing sitz bath after every bm, and a couple times additional each day.
Don't think there is any reason to be alarmed, next week will be even better, I had my surgery on the 18th, I planned on being in some pain for at least 2 weeks, and as you said, this week is better than last week, good luck.

I was similar, heat didn't work well for me, warm baths were great. I use ice sometimes, if I put it on and it hurts more I remove it, if it feels good I keep it on for ten minutes. Listen to your body, but continue with the baths.
