Colonoscopy with fissures

Postby woundedspirit » 06 Sep 2014, 08:34

Has anyone here had a colonoscopy while having an active fissure? I have a strong family history of colon cancer and am overdue for this test. It just seems like the prep will kill me. Can anyone offer their opinions or share their experience? How badly did it affect the fissure afterwards and would there be anything to make the process easier? Thanks.

I personally wouldn't risk it but I have major trust issues with Doctors now. There are other tests now that can detect colon cancer from just a poop sample. They are a lot more accurate than they used to be. Maybe you would have access to something like that?

Hi Woundedspirit, msimon's advice to get a poop sample test, or whatever else is cutting-edge with cancer detection sounds like good advice to me.

However, I am one who had a colonoscopy when my fissure was at its active worst. I dreaded it. However, I didn't have any pain at all - not during the cleanse nor during or after the procedure.
I was really worried because they said don't take any ibuprofen for three days before, and at that time I was living on ibuprofen for my fissure pain. So the days before the cleanse were bad, but the cleanse itself was fine because all my BMs were liquid.
I wish you all the best!
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

msimon - I totally understand your trust issues with doctors! I am going to research and see what is out there then talk to my doctor. I have had polyps removed that they say would have eventually turned in to cancer. Hopefully there is something now short of a colonoscopy.

scientist - that is good to hear that it was pretty easy for you. Very encouraging in case I can't find an alternative. So helpful to get feedback to consider when trying to make a decision!

Thank you both so much!

I had a colonoscopy done with a semi healed but still painful fissure. The prep just gave me horrid stomach cramps but didn't mess with the fissure too bad. The actual procedure was a breeze and I felt no pain afterwards from it.

Hope that eases your mind.

Thanks laker, it does help to ease my mind. It encourages me to go ahead and make my colonoscopy appointment. If I can get this done and out of the way it will be one less bit of stress on my mind knowing I am clear for any colon cancer.
