Glycerin Suppository for constipation?

Postby volans » 26 Sep 2014, 18:32

In the last 2 days I've used oral doses of miralax to try and get out this hard stool. I haven't had any bowel movements in the past 3 days. The problem I always have is 80% of the stool may be soft, but the bottom 20% is hard as a rock.

Should I try a suppository to soften the stool? I don't know if people with AF should use these or not. It doesn't say on the box.

I used ones available for children, as I did not want it to be too drastic a dose. Worked for me when I was having a really bad day.

Try prune juice first. It works wonders on me...

I don't know that I would use a glycerin suppository if I was trying to soften something. What worked better for me was to use a warm water enema. You can buy an enema bulb at the drug store and just fill it with warm water. It's pretty gentle, as long as you are gentle with inserting the tip of the bulb.

I have 2 go to methods that work wonders:

1) first thing in the morning squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into a glass, mix with WARM water (it must be warm), drink down, wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything

2) prune juice - 1/2 cup at bedtime or first thing in the morning - adjust as needed - too much can cause cramps

Ok I had a bowel movement today and I am in the worst pain i've ever encountered. I keep getting sharp knife-like pains in the rectum and I can't get them to stop.

Do people with fissures take pain killers? I can't take this anymore but I also know that pain killers can cause constipation so i'm conflicted here.

I take paracetamol and ibuprofen when things get bad, I never take anything with codeine in as that can constipated.

Sitting in hot bath works wonders too

Hot regular baths, not sitz, worked the best for pain in my case. I would also take ibuprofen (up to 800mg) as soon as I woke up. If I took it first thing, it had a chance to take affect before my BM.

Is today any better? Hopefully each day is a little less painful for you.

about the hard stools, have you tried magnesium? This has been a life saver for me. 600 mg before bedtime, works the next morning. I used to have a 'plug' that made my fissure re-tear in the beginning. Now everything is smooth :) Now i have to cut back on my stool softener.. think I'll be able to live without it, and just keep taking magnesium:)
Anyway, good luck to you! Hope you start feeling better soon!

+1 on the warm water enema. You can also add essential oils or vitamin E to the mix to sooth and heal the fissure.
