Bowel Prep?

Postby chachacha » 08 Jan 2015, 23:53

I will be having the surgery soon, but won't be getting my pre-op instructions until a week before the procedure. Online, however, I've been seeing a range of people who had no "prep" whatsoever (other than no food or drink before having the general anaesthetic), to people having enemas the night before.

For those who have already had their LIS surgery, what did you have to do beforehand?

No prep here but another CRS I consulted wanted an enema the morning of. Every Doctor is different...I almost think the prep is a better idea in order to delay the first BM, as it will hurt...

My prep instructions told me to do an enema. I called and told them I wasn't sure I could because of the pain I was in. They said that was fine so I didn't.

Thanks for your response, Jbl22424. That happened to me when I was scheduled for a flexible sigmoidoscopy. I had had diarrhea for 4 hours in the morning, and just couldn't possibly do the enema later that day. They also said that was okay. It will certainly be interesting to find out next week if they want me to do one before the LIS.

No prep for me and I was fine. The only tip I can give you is to not eat too much one or two days before the surgery. The first BM might be alittle painful, but it helps if you dont have to poop too much.

No problem:) I'm doing well. Very little pain from the incision site. The biggest problem I have is keeping my stools perfect. It's either too soft or too hard. But happy as long as I'm not in terrible fissurepain. Are You nervous about getting the surgery?

Dont be! Easy for me to say, I know ;P at the hospital, you'll be given lots of painkillers, so You won't feel a thing. It's such a small cut, I can't even see it. I only see a bruise. The first BM might hurt alittle, but the pain will stop pretty quickly if You clean off in the shower. Take a couple of painkillers before You go for a BM just to be sure. Dont read any horror stories about the surgery. Remember this surgery might give You your life back! Can You imagine? No more butt-pain!
