Hi Quebecfrog,
did the doctor who diagnosed you prescribe any medication? Or advise you about your diet?
You need an ointment like nifedipine, nitroglycerol (rectogesic) or diltiazem, to apply to your anus twice a day.
You need to find out what foods to eat that will give you small soft stools. You can also take a stool softener like miralax (movicol) or lactulose or some other off-the shelf stool softener.
You need to drink plenty of water. Being dehydrated will make your stools hard and dry.
I also recommend you get a hot water bottle, part-fill it (not too much) with barely-hot water, and sit on it. This is soothing and healing.
For painkillers, try ibuprofen, and see if your doctor will prescribe lidocaine to rub on your anus.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!

Ugh, I know the pain is just terrible. In addition to what was already posted, I also found that very hot baths helped with the sharp pains and burning. Hang in there!

i strongly recommend you buy a sitz bath from a medical supply store - costs about 10 dollars in Canada. Fill it with warm warm water and sit in it for 20 minutes 3 times a day. I add some baking soda and epsom salts to the water.

And if you don't have a medical supply store nearby, Walmart also sell them for about $13.
