Konsyl, Metamucil versus Miralax and alike

Postby Tushi » 11 Jun 2015, 15:59

My gi recommends Konsyl for fiber but my daughter's told her to take Miralax. I am a bit concerned about the long term of Miralax. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I use miralax every day. I've been using it for about 3weeks now. I take half a dose every night before I go to bed. It helps me maintain a soft stool without bulking it which bulky stools hurts me more. I have a BM first thing in the morning and then usually another one in the late afternoon. I love miralax. I took docusate sodium first and stopped that because my stool wouldn't always be soft. But anyway, I'd recommend miralax. Tons of people on here use it long term.

Is it safe to take Miralax indefinitely since the ingredients are not all natural like the phsyllium of Metamucil or konsyl.

I have always heard that miralax is safe to take long term, like forever. Not sure why that is but I have been on it for years with no known bad effects.

My husband was told that he could take a stool softener forever too (following open heart surgery), and I believe that the reason is because it is very safe, but they don't want people to start using them and not seek a doctor's opinion about what ails them. They may have a very serious medical condition that hasn't yet been diagnosed, and just take the laxatives and think that's enough. They want people to only take them short term, see a doctor, and make sure that nothing else serious is happening to cause their symptoms. Once they have the diagnosis, the product is safe long-term.
