Anal fissure

Postby Beebee » 14 Nov 2015, 18:47

Hi all, I'm new to the group and just looking for any advice that may help in my recovery.
Last year I had a colonoscopy due to being severely anaemic for the previous two years in a row ( still severely anaemic again now). All was clear but shortly after I began experiencing intense pain and was diagnosed with thrombossed heammoroids. I was referred to a colorectal specialist who diagnosed both internal and external heammoroids and anal skin tags.
I received banding for the internal ones followed by surgery to remove the external skin tags. That was over three months ago and following an incredibly painful recovery period during which my surgery sites became infected three times, I have now been diagnosed with an anal fissure.
The colorectal surgeon prescribed me with the nitrate cream but unfortunately this made me very unwell for the three days I used it, so now I'm at a loss as to what I can do to try and get my bottom area 'back to normal'. Any advice would be greatly appreciated- it's been a long and painful three months..!!!

Hey Beebee...welcome to the forum. Great place to get advice.

I have not had surgery but have used all the creams. I found nitro ok but the best cream for me has been niphedipine. Diltiazem is the third and gave me a rash.
Aside from cream I would recommend drinking lots of water or herbal teas, good potty positioning (check out squatty potty for the idea), perhaps using a softener like miralax if you are constipated or want to soften your stool, incorporate more oil (flax or olive) in your diet, finally use a heating pad or bottle to soothe your underside after a bm or any time of the day...the more blood flow down there the better!!
Keep the questions coming ....lots of great people on this board who know a lot.
All best - Canadabum

Thank you for your reply.
:thankyou:
I have been using a little stool for BM's to get into the 'right position' which has helped a lot.
I've also been trying to get the balance right between using Lactalose and high dose iron tablets, prescribed for my severe anaemia - which is proving a little tricky due to the constipation effects of the iron tablets.!!!
Is heat good for blood flow?? Have to say that since having my surgery the hospital's post op help/advice has been poor
Many thanks Bee

Hi Bee - heat is great for promoting blood flow. I will often sit on a heating pad at work, watching tv etc etc. It also has a way of relieving pain for me...so double purpose.
Are you able to get a new cream to try it out?
Also - I should have asked about Sitz baths or regular baths. I found sitz too much pressure on that area and did well with a full on bath (takes more time though). This too will help promote blood flow (keep it as warm as you can) and will help keep the area clean to help avoid infection.
I hope that helps. If you have surgery related questions there are many here who have gone through it and can answer in more detail in that area (like msimon, savaici etc)

:thankyou: Thank you for your replies
I'm not sure if I would be able to get a different cream, as after telling my GP that it had made me ill she said "I'm not surprised as it's an opiate"?? "hopefully your fissure will heal up by itself soon"..!!! - and that was that.
One thing that I have tried which gives me some relief, is organic coconut oil. I have used it to form suppositories which give relief from their cooling effect (frozen in freezer) and also seem to 'oil' that area for future BM's. It is also excellent for using for massaging, which has helped my scars a little as they healed quite tightly.!! :D
