Oh I have learned sooo much on here in 1 day than repeated visits to my GP
No I don't think it is compounded and I had no idea that if put on at the opening it relaxes the entire internal sphincter...my consultant def said to make sure it went on the fissure...which may I say caused quite a bit of pain as my sphincter was exceptionally tight when in the spasms....do the NHS know this stuff and just can't be bothered taking the time to explain fully...gggrrrr

This is a common discussion on here but the consensus is that for most people, external application is enough. My CRS's always said to apply externally. Others have been told to actually dilate the area. Fissures are very individual and it can sometimes take a while to find what works for you.

It is also so very common to be given poor care for an anal fissure. Many Doctor's just don't recognize them or know how to treat them properly. Many people are often misdiagnosed as having hemorrhoids and given a steroid cream, which is a big no-no for a fissure. This forum is indeed a Godsend!

As for the compounding...did you have to have your ointment made or was it already in a tube you just purchased?

My dr thought it was hemorrhoids and gave me steroid cream...but I have had hemorrhoids on and of since I was 18 (due to ibs) and knew this pain was totally different and more agonising than any hemorrhoid pain...I put the steroid cream up there for 3 weeks till I went to the consultant.
The GTN just comes in a tube from the chemist....
I am so grateful to have found this site and have nothing but admiration and awe for the people on here who have coped with this for years...I didn't realise pain could be this all consuming

Hi mypoorbutt,

I'm sorry to hear of your pain! As others have said, there's no need to put the GTN up there, just a blob on the outside is sufficient as it gets absorbed into the blood stream.

I also have a young son with aspergers. It's soooo difficult to meet their needs when your bum is screaming at you 24/7!! You are doing a great job!

Really wish I had found this forum at the beginning would have helped so much...
Yes OMB...he gets very distressed when he sees me in pain and angry when I can't do things I used to do...that then makes me feel guilty and frustrated...maybe if I had looked after my bowel this wouldn't have happened...

Don't blame yourself. Bowels are tricky things and things that we actually have very little control of. Hang in there. It's going to get better. :smilyhug:

You are so welcome.

I know what you mean, unless you have had an anal fissure you have NO IDEA! Why on earth are there so many nerves down there?
