Post-fissurectomy recovery times?

Postby stevestate » 14 Oct 2016, 04:43

Hey,
First-time poster to the forum (which has been a great source of comfort THANK YOU!).

I had a fissurectomy and Botox injection on Sept 16th and there appears to be no sign of healing/recovery.

Here's my current routine:

I have cut out alcohol, most dairy, red meat (eat chicken or fish once a week)
I'm drinking 2-3 litres of water per day plus one cup of coffee and maybve 1-2 cups green teas
Eating high fibre foods (porridge with dried fruits & almonds, grains, salad, chick peas, veg soups etc)
Taking 5 stool softeners (docusate sodium) spread out through the day (though they don't seem to work anymore)
I take a warm bath after my bowel movement every day.
I try to get out the house for a walk most days though when I'm low or in pain then I stay home.

Been off work since start of July. My bowel movements seem to go from soft one day to hard-tipped the next day and for no reason as I'm pretty militant with my routine. There was blood two days ago though blood is rare.

I was told (any may have read on here) that Botox is at its peak 2-4 weeks after surgery. I have noticed a reduction in twitches of the sphincter. However, I'm worried that I haven't started to see an improvement in these 2-4 week period which is coming to an end on Monday.

Can anyone help with recovery times? Am I expecting too much too soon?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear your suffering. I had the exact same procedure in June and to be honest the spasms stopped straight away. Although the pain continued for at least another 6 weeks, continuing to improve after that although the discomfort never totally went, but I have a long deep fissure so didn't really expect it too.
I know some people who didn't really see improvement until the 7/8 week stage, although it is strange your still getting actual spasms...has the doc given you any cream to put on as well because if I hadn't had my cream I know I would have been in more pain.
Would love to help with the diet but I struggle to keep my BMs hard as I have IBD so I'm no help there at all.
Maybe give it a couple more weeks and ask to see your CRS
fingers crossed

Thanks mypoorbutt.
I was using GTN prior to surgery but the consultant said I don't need to use it post-op. It gave me severe headaches so I was kinda glad I was told to stop using it. Think I should go back to using it? Or can you recommend anything else?

My CRS said to continue using the cream as it helps the healing process, and I can honestly say when I don't put it on even when the Botox was at it's best I can tell the difference, even if it was just an increase in the burning or discomfort. GTN has got me through this past year...without it I couldn't cope with the agony.
I know every doc is different but mine specialises in IDBs and if you are going to the loo a lot everyday then the GTN is essential...he even told me to put it on 4x a day after the Botox to give myself the best chance
I would say keep using it...I'm lucky I only get the strong pounding headache for about 5 mins...I guess it's which pain is worse.
I have tried numerous creams but none of them stop the spasms unfortunately

Thanks mypoorbutt.
I tried Dulcolax (bisacodyl) last night (in addition to the stool softeners which I am thinking of ceasing taking) and I had a good BM first thing followed by a very loose BM about an hour later. Whilst having two BMs isn't ideal, I can't help feel elated when the stools are soft. What a life it's become!
I'm hoping this will be the start of healing (with the diet and routine mentioned above). Will keep people posted on here in case it helps people in the future.
Thanks again

Glad you have had a better day, yes it's very strange when life starts to revolve around your BMs and thinking about your butt can change your mood.
I'm sure you will start to see some healing and less pain, fissures can be very persistent things so we have to try and out last them lol
Good luck and yes keep posting reading others experiences always helps me.

Day 2 of taking Dulcolax (bisacodyl) and Day 1 of no stool softeners (have taken 5 a day for 3.5 months until yesterday).
Excellent BM. Really soft. Some slight stinging afterwards which is mainly due to bad BMs earlier in week.
Feels like the laxatives and the regime (mentioned in the first post above) might work out for me, though I'm sure we've all had that feeling through all of our ordeals at some point right?!
Will keep you all updated in case this helps people.
Thanks
Steve

Day 3 of taking Dulcolax (bisacodyl) and Day 2 of no stool softeners. 2 BMs - very very soft.

Day 4 of taking Dulcolax (bisacodyl) and Day 3 of no stool softeners. 4 BMs. Extremely watery stools (not really stools tbh). Whilst its great to not have trouble with BMs I'd rather not be having 4 BMs as even without the fissure would cause stinging etc.

Might be body getting used to the laxative so will give it one more day and see how I get on.

Day 5 of taking Dulcolax (bisacodyl) and Day 4 of no stool softeners.

Just one BM! Really soft. Best day I've had in a while. Barely any stinging post-BM. Some slight stinging returned around 9pm. Whist in the previous days my stomach had felt very unsettled, which laxatives will do, today I didn't feel anything really.

Will keep using the Dulcolax.

Day 6 of taking Dulcolax (bisacodyl) and Day 5 of no stool softeners.

Had a BM first thing which is usual. Not soft and runny like previous BMs on Dulcolax. First stool quite difficult to get out followed by smooth paste-like stools. Left a stinging which lasted most of the day. Not agony but discomfort.

My diet is high fibre (diet the day before was porridge w/seeds/dates/prunes/dried fruit, tomato soup, apple, multi-grain snacks (Walker's Sunbites), wholegrain pasta with kale and mushrooms) so even if the Dulcolax doesn't produce runny or soft stools, surely the high-fibre diet should be producing that effect???

The frustration continues...
