Ideas to relax a tight sphincter?

Postby banjobuddy » 24 Dec 2016, 04:22

I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas regarding relaxing a really tight sphincter. I'm planning on seeing my old CRS in the New Year, but obviously can't do anything right now, being Christmas. I thought I was eating some decent stuff for hard motions, but for the last couple of days, my stools (particularly when I get up in the morning) have been bulky and tricky to pass. This is what I've eaten as well:

Throughout the day:
Water - about 3 x 1 pint/0.5 litre jugs
Morning:
Wholemeal honey sandwich with some butter on (no crusts)
Whole fresh pear with the skin on
Movicol (Miralax) - 80ml

Lunch:
Fish finger sandwhich on wholemeal bread with butter
Whole avocado
Tinned pears

Tea:
Cup of peppermint tea with demerara sugar (1.5 spoons)

Dinner:
White fish (cod or Pollock) fillet with mixed dried herb dressing, salt and pepper
Jacket potato - potato only no skin (microwaved)
Broccoli and peas
1/4 Cantaloupe
Pot of apple & pear baby food

10'Clock:
Cup of peppermint tea with demerara sugar (1.5 spoons)
Bedtime:
Movicol (Miralax) - 80ml

I've also been eating Altoid peppermints throughout the day.

Something's obviously not working here properly, but I can't figure out what it is. I went for a walk yesterday afternoon and try and get a walk in every day.

As I've talked about on here for several days, I got a fissure a couple of weeks ago (history of them and hems) and although it doesn't seem to have split again after my last two morning bowel motions, I'm sure it can't take many more hard to pass ones before it splits again.

Hi Banjo,

Your diet looks pretty good to me.

I always find exhaling just as you are 'going' helps relax things. Hot baths help too, but don't have a lasting effect.
You could try adding Fybogel to your diet which might help soften your stools a bit more perhaps?

Good luck, LemonMan

Hi Lemon,

Interesting you mention the breathing issue, as I was taught to do this biofeedback technique which in theory helps to expel the stools. It does work to a certain extent, but having a tight sphincter muscle doesn't always provide enough 'give' in the muscle and if anything's a bit bulky, I'm in trouble! I used to have Fybogel (or Psyllium husk), but use Movicol now. I've been on it for about 3-4 years. They say it's not addictive, but once your bowel is used to a routine, it's very hard to change. I may simply have to face the prospect of a LIS operation to let things pass more easily.

Hi Banjo,

Yes it's pretty daunting when LIS starts to become the best option. I'm also on Movicol, but have only been on it (on and off) for a year now. I'm still hoping I can beat this thing without LIS but it does wear you down over time for sure. I'm starting to wonder now if I am just delaying the inevitable.
