How should I apply glyceryl trinitrate?

Postby mrAnonymous » 17 Mar 2017, 09:27

I've been put on a course of 8 (or maybe 10, can't remember) weeks of using GTN on my anus to try and heal my AF. Not having done this before, I'd like some advice:

Where should I apply the GTN - all over the anus or just at the 6 o'clock location where my AF is?

How much should I apply? I've read the headaches are pretty bad, so should I just use a pea-sized ball of the stuff?

How often should I apply it? Twice a day? After a BM, or just at any time?

How far should I stick it up the canal? Should I just apply it externally, or should any go inside?

I apply a pea sized amount 3 times a day. Mine is 0.2%. Always clean and dry the area thoroughly first, either air dry or use a hairdryer. You'll find varying opinions on how best to apply it. Some say that it should only be gently applied externally, while lightly moving along the inside. Others say to apply it till the first knuckle of your index finger. I do it both ways, depending on how sensitive the area is feeling. Make sure you use gloves, or you'll get headaches. It's very potent.

Sometimes I apply a tiny bit before a BM to relax the area. I think it helps. Then I do a warm bath, dry off and apply the right amount.

Gloves? But I thought the way it got into the bloodstream was through the anal lining, not the fingers?

It's absorbed through the skin. It's also given to heart patients to rub on the chest in emergencies.

OK then - could you advise me where to get appropriate gloves? I live in the UK.

Also do you use new ones per application or can you just wash them?

I wouldn't know about that since I live in the US. I imagine you could find latex free gloves at any pharmacy. If you want to save, cut off the fingers of a glove and use those one by one. That way you don't have to throw away a whole glove. I would definitely not reuse them.

Hi I get my gloves off amazon next day delivery not too expensive either and the main reason for the disposable gloves is that the GTN absorbs faster through the nail bed and that can increase the risk of headaches
I prefer to apply mine inside as my fissure was mainly internal. Again some surgeons say external is fine others say internal is better
Wow patience why on earth didn't I think of cutting the other fingers off and using them I could have saved loads over the last 2 years lol that's a great idea

Haha, I discovered that when I came back from vacation and had only two gloves left and not enough energy to go buy some more. It works!
