I've seen a lot of people suggesting that anal tags are better left alone - I just wanted to share a positive experience and say that if you're on the fence about getting it done, go do it!
That said, the surgeries and the recovery weren't easy. I had four large anal tags that my doctor excised in four separate surgeries, spaced five weeks apart each. That is a LONG time to be in recovery. The good thing about getting them removed individually though, is that the doctor is able to see how each of the excisions is healing when removing the next tag, which I think results in a better looking end product (yes we all care how it looks back there!)
Also, I think dealing with the surgeries one tag at a time, is while it takes longer, the recovery for each surgery has to be easier. My main tips are: 1) no fiber in the recovery - less bulk = smaller BMs = less pain! 2) try to eat as little as possible the day before the surgery and about a week after - same idea about reducing bulk and 3) take 1-2 tbsp of mineral oil after each meal for about a week after each surgery to facilitate quick and "complete" BMs.
I've just finished recovering from my 4th surgery, and it looks WAY better back there, it's easier to keep clean, and no more pain / swelling. My doctor is a colorectal surgeon who specializes in this type of thing, I wouldn't consider seeing any other type of doctor to get it done.
So yes, if you are on the fence about this, go get it done! It's a painful / difficult process, but not having to deal with anal tags long term is worth it.
