about colonoscopy

Postby Guest » 31 Mar 2008, 21:26

Has anyone here had a colonoscopy in the afternoon? I have one scheduled for next Monday afternoon at 1:30. The last one I had a few years ago was early in the morning. A nurse is supposed to call me with instructions, but I'm sitting here wondering how the prep works for an afternoon appt. I'm guessing you start the prep early the morning of. That'll be different. I would think I'll have to get up awful early to make sure I'm fully cleaned out.

I had my colonoscopy in December at noon. I had to wake up at 5 am and drink the golightly entirely by 8 am. Then, I just waited until my appointment at noon.
Oh yeah, I could not eat and drink after 10pm the night before.
Hope this helps! Good luck! My colonoscopy was not bad at all!

Hi Kim, I guess I could, but they said that a nurse will be calling me with the instructions. Hopefully today so I can find out.
I belong to another board (hobby related, but you can post off topic messages) and asked there if anyone had a colonoscopy in the afternoon. About 5 or so people answered saying they had to do the prep in the middle of the night, so they were up all night and it was horrible. And they'd never schedule one in the afternoon again. So, I'm glad to hear from iamtiredofthis that it was a morning prep. Hopefully, I'll have that option.

Well, the nurse called and didn't tell me much. She said she's sending a packet of information that will explain it all. So, that should get here tomorrow and then I'll know what's going on for sure. That'll give me enough time to reschedule for a morning appt. if I think I should. All she did was take my medical history and ask what medicines I take. She did say that I would be on a liquid diet on Sunday, but that's about she'd tell me.
She did tell me to go off the iron pill until after the test. I told her that I take Metamucil everyday and I had read that some doctors want you to stop taking it a few days in advance. She said they didn't have anything about stopping fiber supplements.
I know taking Metamucil makes me go every morning and would think it would be a good thing to keep using it until the liquid diet. I feel like it really cleans me out. I wonder why some websites say to stop it a few days ahead of time.

Looks like I'll be doing the Fleet Phospho soda prep with Dulcolax tablets. I start the liquid diet Sunday morning and at 6:00 pm take the Phospho soda with 8 oz. of clear liquid, then 4 more 8 oz. glasses of water or clear liquid in the next hour. Then, at 8:00 I take 3 Dulcolax. And keep drinking clear liquids until I go to bed.
Monday morning at 6:00 am, I take another dose of Phospho soda with liquid and 4 more 8 oz. glasses of clear liquid in an hour. I can keep drinking liquids until 8:00 am. My appt. is at 1:30.
I read that the Phospho soda is disgusting. Last time, I used the Golytely. At first it was no big deal until about the second to last drink. Then, I started to feel pretty nauseous. Hoping this stuff isn't bad enough to make me nauseous. The paperwork said to mix it with water, but I called and the nurse said I can mix it with something else that's clear. So, I guess I'll try Sprite. Just a guess that I will like it better cold, like it was with the Golytely.
No mention of a low residue diet or stopping the Metamucil. Not even stopping medications, except no iron. So, I guess I can take my Nexium which will be good because the acid reflux is probably gonna kick in. And a valium before bed, which I take for restless legs.
If anyone has any suggestions or if you've used the phospho soda prep, I'd sure appreciate any experiences so I know what to expect.
Thanks,
Julie

Julie - The golightly is nasty - your right! The first drink was not to bad - but by the second one, I wanted to throw up. Honestly, once my BM's were liquid and almost clear - I stopped drinking it. I only drank half the bottle.

Yeah, it was bad! But, I made myself drink every last drop. And I couldn't believe it when I had the colonoscopy and the doctor said I wasn't cleaned out fully when he came in afterwards. He was able to do it, he just wasn't very happy with me. He wasn't the nicest doctor anyway. Neither me or my husband liked him much. I was pooping clear except for a couple of flecks, but I guess he was a real stickler. All I could say was I drank the whole thing and it was the truth. Oh well!
I guess you don't know how your body will react to different preps. I'm hoping this really cleans me out. But, I want to eat very lightly on Saturday just to make sure.

I lied to them. I told them I drank the whole thing when I only drank half. No one ever said anything to me, thank God!

Did you have to do any enemas with yours?
I remember after my last colonoscopy a couple of friends said I should have done an enema in the morning because of the little flecks. They said their doctor had that in their instructions. I just told them the doctor never said to, so I didn't.
Now, I can't imagine doing an enema! I've never given myself one plus sticking something up there doesn't sound very comfortable right now.
