I'm still experiencing leakage 18 weeks post-surgery the doctor says it is because it is not completely healed yet I'm hoping when it does finally heal the leakage will stop. It's not a lot but it's enough to have to wear a small gauze blotter. It's less if the stool is more formed and a bit harder it's worse when it's softer can't get a completely clean and I have to change the blotter at least 2 or 3 times a day. Also diagnosed with low IGA which could be hindering the healing but from what I read on this form maybe it's not that. Just very frustrating also my digestive system has seems to have changed I lost 30 lbs over this deal. Went from 175 to 145 been holding steady . I think I'm eating as much maybe is not much junk but don't seem to be gaining

this happens to me always. i notice it is less if its a semi hard stool , worse if they are a bit soft. Takes forever to clean then i have change my pad 3x a day. i wonder if its because of what was done is why its harder to clean and will that straighten itself out along with d leakage once healed. i had the surgery on 2/10/17 fissure repair with partial lis.Still not healed now he's talking about his second five minute procedure that supposedly with clean out the wound and help it heal but I am very leery about doing this I had setbacks on my first surgery had an abscess and I was out of work to 6 weeks lost 30 lbs

any thoughts would be appreciated

Ok...I joined the board the day after my LIS. Ive been suffering for almost 3 months. When the condition first presented itself I went to my family Dr...he got me an appointment with a Colorectal Surgeon...didnt sat the "f" word...He said I had tags and wanted the specialist to look...well I canceled the apptment because i had a family obligation...rescheduled it for the soonest next apptment...Damn a month away....Well i couldnt wait...so I scheduled an apptment with another Dr...I didnt realize he was only a Gastroentroligist...He looked and scheduled a Colonoscopy....which i failed to cleanse well enough because of pain...you know prior to the procedure I questioned his motive to my wife...for some reason I felt it was about the $$$..Well i had the procedure...he cauterized the papilea and the large one he stitched....i went back to him in a week...he tried to take the stitches out but couldnt as i was climbing the table in pain...He rescheduled me for another week out...Meantime my scheduled apptment with the CRS came up...so i went to him July 3rd...during the initial evaluation i could tell he and his nurse were perplexed by what the other Dr did...but they were quite professional and did not "diss" the other Dr...Understnding the pain i was in...he scheduled my LIS for July 5th...Procedure was done...the CRS said everything went according to his assumptions. He used a relatively new local anesthetic Exparel...i was told it lasted 3 days and had to wear a wristband indicating its presence... also prescribed me with Oxycotin ...well ive been somewhat backed up...despite stool softeners and fiber mixes and eating fiberous foods...My second BM since Thursday this evening followed by 2 oxys...the pain is unbelievable...i tried to avoid the pain meds...after a half hour i took 1 and an hour i took another.. the oxys put me to sleep...leakage is present i dont care how much effort i put in...My BMs have been incomplete(at least i think so)...I think im going to be proactive tomorrow and try to take milk of magnesia to get me a further colon cleanse...Im not really happy where i am right now...but trying to make the most of following my prescribed after care...its frustrating to say the least....thanks for reading my rant...BTW if you have the procedure insist on the Exparel...awesome non narcotic drug...

Hello aimonaali,
It has been more than three years since your last post, and I was wondering how things have been with you since. Hopefully your leakage issue is resolved now? No more new fissuresI, I hope?

I had my fistulotomy, fissurectomy, and LIS barely three days ago. I know it is too soon to hit the panic button, but I'm noticing a good amount of fecal discharge on the gauze that I have tucked in there.

Feeling a bit jittery and really need to hear from you or someone who can reassure that it'll go away.

Thank you, and best wishes!

Embarrassed guy. Similar results. It will get better. Make sure you take enough miralax and stool softener. NO PUSHING. NO OVERCONFIDENCE wen you start to heal. From what the Dr told me incontinence
Is very rare. The thing I lack is patience. You'll be fine and visit this forum for continued encouragement. Good luck.

Thank you for your words of reassurance, Payne4me!

My CRS put me on mineral oil from day 1 to ensure that I wouldn't constipate. Fortunately, I didn't have to take oxycodone except once when I woke up from anesthesia, and my pain has been well under control using Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and (equally importantly if not more) CBD oil.

Constipation hasn't been an issue either. I had my first BM 18 hours after the surgery and I've been pretty regular since. As a matter of fact, I'm actually cutting down the mineral oil to half a dose starting tonight to get to one BM from two or three a day.

Overall, things are looking pretty decent and I hope and pray for that trend to continue. My biggest concern at the moment is with incontinence, both flatus and fecal. It's indeed very comforting to hear from you that it won't be permanent.

Please keep us all posted of your progress and I'll do the same for the benefit of others.

Good luck with your continuing recovery!

Best,
eG

Hi embarrasedguy1971,

What you describe is perfectly normal Post-LIS. I had a similar issue when i had LIS in 2012 and i used to think it was liquid stool on the gauze each day. It's actually just weeping from the incision wound and probably not actually incontinence related at all. (although even if it was it shouldn't be a concern at this stage)

Flatulence is also inevitable in the days/weeks post surgery but it's normally of the silent variety!

They will both eventually die down and disappear after a few weeks and should not concern you at this stage.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, Davo. These forums and people like you who have been there have been such a blessing!

In my ongoing saga, I have now developed what appears to be a bean sized external hemorrhoid. It's not hurting (and hopefully won't in the future), but it certainly puts a bit of a damper on the positive outlook I've been trying to maintain the last few days. At this point, it feels like a very long road with no end in sight. It's always one thing after another... *sigh*

Hi,

It's probably not a haemorrhoid as these are normally associated with straining and this is something that shouldn't be happening now. I used to have have haemorrhoid problems but since LIS this has changed somewhat.

It could be a skin tag, general swelling around the operation area or granulation tissue (but it's probably too early for this).

The most important thing is to ensure it is not infection so if it becomes painful, swollen or you notice any puss coming from it go straight back to hospital.

I find we generally worry about most things post-surgery and nine times out of ten things tend to be completely normal.

So a few things things to remember.

1. Keep things soft post surgery, I was using Movicol (Miralax in the USA) on a daily basis and eating soup each day
2. Don't strain when moving so no heavy lifting
3. Don't stay laid up for days - exercise gets the blood flowing which speeds up recovery so get out walking when you feel up to it
4. Don't confuse incontinence with wound seepage each day - this could go on for weeks
5. In a few weeks you may see granulation tissue - this is where the body heals the incision wound and be confusing to look as it can be mistaken for infection. It looks like tender bright red flesh - google it maybe.
6. Go and get your life back and have fun again.

Glad you're over LIS and wishing you a speedy recovery!

Wish me luck guys I'm going for another minot procedure this coming Monday to clean out the ulcer and hopefully make it heal then stop the dam leakage! He may put one stitch in it but he says it should not bleed and I should not need gauze will see
