Pelvic pain explanatory video

Postby patience_and_healing » 15 May 2019, 01:37

Long but interesting video by a Stanford doctor on pelvic pain: https://youtu.be/xnJc-3M9NRQ. She mentions proctalgia at 25:06.

Thanks for posting this - it's interesting.

It's noticeable that there's something of a male/female divide in the range of diagnoses and treatments mentioned in this doctor's survey. The emphasis in this video is on female pelvic dysfunction - there's not so much about the male version of the disorder.

Although proctalgia is briefly mentioned, it's only in the context of 'proctalgia fugax'. Also , the difference between proctalgia and pudendal neuralgia isn't really covered here, as far as I can see.

But it's certainly useful to have this overview, and the numerous illustrations and diagrams are particularly helpful in underlining the complexity of pelvic pain and its potential causes, I think.

I haven't watched the whole video so I didn't know that it mainly focused on female pelvic dysfunction. Both men and women have the same pelvic muscles though, so maybe some of this can be applied to men as well? I understand that there will be different nerves due to different anatomy, but some basic disorders are shared, though the symptoms could present differently. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, there are a lot of shared aspects, and initially it feels as though the doctor had planned to discuss both female and male equally - but in the video she covers an awful lot of material, and I guess in the end she found that female-only conditions like endometriosis took up so much space that there just wasn't room for everything. It would be interesting to see more videos from this clinic, though - the sections on pain management made me want to know more, particularly about the nerve-blocking procedures the doctor mentions but does not for the most part describe in detail.

There are several videos by Stanford doctors on pelvic pain. They have a center for it and it's where I'm being treated.

Yes, they're in YouTube but a bit difficult to find because there isn't a dedicated channel. Here's another one I found: https://youtu.be/xL8MxqBldYw

Thanks - this video, while interesting and informative, also seems to be targeted mainly at women. As you point out, a lot of the information in the Stanford videos is equally valid for men and women. I found some good info intended specifically for men at the London Pelvic Pain Clinic - though I should add that I don't have any first hand experience of their treatment program.

This is clearly an area of medicine and physiotherapy that's expanding and developing. It's noticeable how many different aspects of it are linked in these explanations, treatments and exercises - all the way from muscular contractions and nerve paths to mindfulness and holistic therapy.

There are a couple of videos that give some idea of the London clinic's work, introduced by its owner, Karl Monahan:

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out. I agree that pelvic pain research is discovering new things as time goes on. It's definitely been a neglected area of medicine in the past.
