Day 11 post op

Things have been really good between day 6 and now. Every day having a morning BM, zero pain, doing the bath and going about my day. It has been great just not having to think about my butt at all and starting to feel more and more normal as the days go by.

Last night I relaxed a bit with the diet and I was genuinely just not thinking about the fissure for the first time in forever, which felt great. However, I did have a tiny spot of blood with my morning BM today which lowered my mood a little since things have been so good and blood-free recently. Luckily it didn't cause pain so I am hoping it wasn't a set back. Maybe I just needed a gentle reminder that I can't relax with food yet and I have to stick to my boring diet for a while longer.

I have a follow up with my CRS on Monday so will see what he thinks and what I should do with my diet in the next few weeks...

2 WEEKS POST-OP

Yesterday I had my follow-up appointment with my CRS and he said that the surgery site looks fine and that things are healing up nicely. I did experience a small amount of pain when he examined which was a bit annoying. I always get stressed that certain things like that are setbacks in some way to the healing but I know I need to just look forward.

Summary of my progress so far:

Diet:

I have relaxed a little with my diet and am trying to eat things here and there that aren't on my usual boring meal plan. Still healthy eating of course but trying to slowly become a bit more flexible. I still do 1 movicol and magnesium to keep stools soft.

Pain:

Since surgery I have been almost completely pain-free! I have noticed that if there is a harder BM or a hard tip, I will have pain level 1 or discomfort but nothing more than that and it lasts a few seconds. The rest of the day I am totally pain-free. In other words pain-wise it is significantly better than before the surgery.

Incontinence:

I have had zero incontinence with gas and stools. Definitely no issues there. At most, there is maybe a tiny tiny bit of leakage around the site which I will only notice when I have a sitz bath a few hours after my BM. This is just a couple of tiny specks in the water but nothing of concern. No staining or soiling in underwear whatsoever.
Exercise:

I was walking for exercise already around day 4 or 5 post op then gradually started to walk more and was doing 1 hour uphill walks soon after. Today I will go to the gym for the first time and will hopefully keep this up on a daily basis for a while and gradually increase intensity.

Bleeding:

I had a tiny bit of blood on the toilet paper 3 days ago which concerned me. I know it was because I had overeaten a little the day before. This was the only time I saw blood apart from the first day after surgery when things were very raw still.

Pain meds:

I never took anything strong that the doc prescribed. I would take panadol and ibuprofen right after surgery but I never really felt sore enough to take it. I took it as a precaution and didn't mind doing so as they are very mild anyway. These days I actually take one ibuprofen when I wake up to get ahead of any potential pain of a BM. I don't think it's necessary at all, but it does help me relax psychologically and as a result, 95% of my BMs are completely pain-free. If I forget to take ibuprofen beforehand, I have noticed some discomfort but I don't know how much of this is due to my own tensing up or the lack of pain-killer. I have given myself 1 more week of doing this then I will stop the morning dose and will be 100% without painkillers.

Mental Health:

Well, it has improved significantly since surgery. Being able to get through a whole day with zero spasms or tightness is just the best and makes me feel more and more like a normal person again. I still need to keep reminding myself that healing can take longer for some and that I need to be patient but am also very happy with how things are going so far.
Full healing:

My CRS said that full healing is usually around 6 weeks. I really hope that 4 weeks from now I will be here with some good news!
Work:

Given that I flew home to Adelaide for surgery, I am still here and therefore not working yet. This has been awesome for recovery but I am craving getting back asap. My work is based in Europe so I feel it is too early to take a long-haul flight and get straight back into it but will probably fly back around the 6-week post-op mark. I think most people only take 1 or 2 weeks then are back at work and I definitely could have been working already 1 week post-op with how I was feeling.

Overall I am extremely glad that I had the surgery and hope that things just keep getting better from here onwards! :)

Happy to hear what you are doing so well!

I'm still on my slow upward curve. It's slow, but it's upward! My parents are visiting from China and are staying with me now. It's nice that both of us are near family now =) Them being here really makes me feel more grounded.

I read in another post that you are a dancer?! What kind of dance?

Aw that is nice your family will be around, apple!

I replied to your message but in case it doesn't arrive, I specialise in swing dancing :)

Cannot wait to be back at it 100%!

3 weeks post-op!

Things are going great! Not much to report really, I am just feeling very positive and content with how recovery has been. I am feeling more and more like a normal person every day, eating out in restaurants, adding some spice to meals, drinking tasty coffee again and best of all...not obsessing over my butt!

I am back at the gym with regular workouts, sleeping extremely well and mentally in a much much better place. I don't think I can claim that I've healed and am aware that full healing usually takes around 6 weeks but it all feels normal down there. I am still on stool softeners to play it safe but am enjoying at least experimenting with different foods and am finally off my terribly boring and repetitive fissure diet.

Let's see how I am at 4 weeks!

Wow this is amazing I'm so happy for you! Before lis did you have pain and spasms after bms or just pain during? I only have pain during like razor blade sharp pain then soreness after for up to 30min this has basically been my life for 6 years apart from during my Botox where I was completely free from all pain till it wore off. So I'm wondering do people with pain just during bms get lis?

Before LIS I usually had a sharp pain right after a BM that would last a few seconds. Usually between pain level 1-5. Then I'd be using rectogesic and doing baths to avoid the tightness and spasms. Most days I'd only feel a bit tight but wouldn't really be in pain but I had a good routine to deal with the symptoms. On the day of surgery I couldn't use rectogesic or take painkillers and really noticed how tight and sore I felt without them.

I'd say people definitely go for LIS even if the pain is only during BMs. Simply because living with an open fissure is still very stressful even if it doesn't cause much pain throughout the day.

Years of trial and error? Wow, I can't think of anything more frustrating, stressful and anxiety-inducing. No one should suffer for that long when there are successful and low-risk surgical options out there. It all depends on priorities in the end I suppose. My priority was being able to have a life again (what it means for me anyway). To enjoy all types of food, travel, camping, adventure, sex and flexibility in plans whilst still eating healthy like I always did anyway. I'd say after some months of dedicated natural healing attempts, go for surgery unless you're not a good candidate for age/medical reasons.

Living with an open wound in a delicate area for years on end is not ok in my opinion.
