Weight Loss

Postby chrishell » 30 Dec 2009, 09:59

I am having trouble not loosing too much weight. Has anyone else had this problem? I know it is all psychological, but I can't seem to get past it. My body says if I don't have a bm than I don't eat. If I eat and not have a bm, then I am in pain throughout the lower colon and my af/muscle spasms are worse.
I have tried Miralax and softners, but if it isn't liquid, then it isn't coming out. One of the doctors I have seen told me to use an enema every other day to every couple of day. Has anyone gotten this advise and did you try it, did it work?

I lost a lot of weight because of this fissurething...I think it is common.

I've lost a ton of weight after having my fissure. I'm 5'8" and weighed a hair under 140 lbs when the whole thing started, and at my lowest point I was down to about 115 lbs. I'm now back up to maybe 118 lbs or so but that's after making a conscious effort to eat as much as I can.
Have you changed your diet at all due to the fissure? A lot of folks cut down on meat and sharply increase fiber intake and I think that contributes to it. And of course the fear of eating due to the painful after-effects (i.e., poops) doesn't help either.

Thank goodness I am not the only one. I have changed my diet (more than I would have wanted) and had to drop things like nuts and dairy. It took one time of the after effects with nuts to decide that I could no longer eat them.
I was just concerned about the weight loss as my doctor has started testing for what else could be wrong such as gallbladder, cancer, etc.
I have dropped over 30 pounds in 4 months. Kind of gets scary at times. Now it is crazy and a major pain in the tush. New wardrobe is not the thing I want to be going after right now!

Hey Chrishell, I got tested for a bunch of different things after I dropped major weight too :) I had a colonoscopy, 5 CT scans of various areas of the body, a couple of MRIs, and blood tests galore. I'm actually not done yet and am going in for a bone scan tomorrow. So far everything's been negative though, so fingers crossed.
I'd try not to worry too much about it since it's a common thing for fissure sufferers, but your doc is doing the right thing by double checking. In the best case, you can be assured that nothing else is wrong, and in the worst case, you can catch something early, so I think it's good that your doc sounds like a prudent fellow.

I just found the post. I live about 6 miles from NIU. Talk about a small world! I graduated from NIU with a BS. I go to Rockford for my CR surgeon specialist. Don't want to mess around with small town clinics for something with this level of pain.
I see that you are listed as healed. How long did it take? Did you have surgery (LIS) and did you have skin tags removed?
I am so incredibly tired of fighting this and I have only been dealing with it since mid-September. The lowest level of pain I deal with feels like a splinter the size of a toothpick stuck in my tush, and that is on a good day! We all know what bad days feel like...no more need be said on that.

Hey Chris,
I did not have LIS. Occasionally, I will have a bit of blood if I get const, but I think I am healed because I was able to go through the Pelvic Floor Retraining class at Mayos last summer. It was as Kim describes--one step forward, two steps backward at times. So, I cannot honestly answer your question as to how long it took. I know it was an ongoing process. Getting on an A/D really helped me and also seeing a psychiatrist since I also have IBS. Do you go to a CRS group in Rockford? My son lives in Rockford on Second Avenue in a group home. He worked at Pizza Hut on Alpine for several years, but lost his job a few years ago when the Pizza Huts were sold. He sees a doc at Rockford Gastroenterology since he has Crohn's Disease. I love his doc there--Dr. Aaron Shields. He's very compassionate!!

I didn't even know about groups for anything related to this. My Dr. is Dr. McCanse, compassionate and funny. He and I can laugh about the embarrassing side of this problem, trying to explain the way the pain feels.
I'm not sure about an A/D. In general, I am a happy person and have tried my hardest not to let this get me down. Only had a few days of "oh poor me, not will ever be right again". But then I get over it and try to look at the positive side of being forced to be more healthy! Of course if I am depressed over it, then the last thing I want to do it talk about it. Oh what a vicious cycle of pain we live. Do A/D relax muscles?
