Hi everybody on the boat! Can i join YOU as a newbie?

Postby ridvan » 22 Mar 2010, 13:11

Hi there,
I hope everybody is doing well on their healing process! It is surprising to see that many people have similar stories about AF. I ll try to tell my story shortly.
I have been suffering from AF for over 2 years without knowing it is an AF actually. I thought it was hemorrhoid. I think i got this becoz of the often-occured constipation as a result of unbalanced diet, lack of water consumption and so on. I had times which i didnt go for a BM for 3-4 days! Imagine!!!
I am having painfull BMs, bleedind, sleepless nights becoz of pain, itchy feeling, being hell scared of going to washroom (leading more severe constipation) and so on. I guess you al are familiar with these problems. Such a pain in the a** eh?!
Well, after i read informations on websites, i changed my diet which has high-fibre, lots of water, no alcohol, flax seed supplement, even broccoli (i'd never think that i'd like to buy broccoli as i am a meat-lover person). At first they seemed to help; however, i didnt need a BM for 3-4 days again till last night! So, finally, i decided to go to a doctor today.
Well, she wasnt a specialist in my concern, it was just a walk-in clinic. I told her my situation and she confirmed me. She prescribed me on "ratio-PROCTOSONE" as both ointment and suppositories; also "Lax A Day" and "Docusate Sodium 100 mg". I am really wondering how i will manage to put those suppositories "in there"!! She told me to use those medications for 2-3 weeks. If it doesnt seem to help, she will refer me to a specialist. (btw, how are those specialists called?)
We will see what the tie will bring for me. I REALLY HOPE it will be ok. Becoz this is really lowering the life quality and makes you go through the hell. In my languagae there is a saying " May God doesn't let this happen even to my enemy". I totally agree that on AF issue.
It is so good to know that i am alone on this path. Thanks to everyone for being here and support!!!
p.s. English is my second language, so i might have done some mistakes. Sorry for that!
Hope everyone has a good, painless day!

Hey Ridvan, Welcome aboard!! Indeed, most of us are all on the same boat (with the exception of the healed) and can sympathize fully with what your going through.
Firstly, I've never heard of ratio proctosone so can't really comment on it, nor have I heard of lax a day, but as long as it does as the name suggests it should be ok, I have however heard of docusate sodium, only because it's what i'm using and have been for months, it's a good stool softener, although some people prefer Miralax (Movicol)
Secondly, I don't think the specialist you've seen really knows a great deal (by the sounds of it) or she'd know that inserting suppositories with an AF is a definite no-no and that 2-3 weeks is nowhere near long enough for any medication to kick in (my opinion only) time will tell!
Finally, specialists in this field are called CRS' (colorectal surgeons) and as anyone will tell you on this forum, a good one is damn hard to come by.
Best of luck and i'm sure others will give you some great advice, this forum is the best, so rest assured your in the right place!

Thanks alot for ur answer StevePain!
As now, after i took one dose of Lax a Day, i managed to have a BM, which was bit painfull in short term. it seems ratio-PROCTOSONE seems to work, no post-BM pain so far. But i think i need something else as a heal-enhancer too. (?)
So, u r saying that suppositories are not good for me? why is that? are they causing more trouble "in there"? Then what about the internal ointments with the long tip applictor?
Thanks in advance!

You need to see a GP and get some Miralax, that will get things moving, unless the Docusate Sodium is working for you, how are your BM's, are they consistently soft? Personally I try to achieve the tooth paste effect, stools of this consistency seem to pass with ease, but this can only be done with a healthy diet, plenty of water and stool softeners, and you have to be strict with yourself!
The trouble with suppositories is (1) they will catch the fissure when you insert into the rectum Image and (2) long term use can thin out the skin which isn't good for the fissure and can stop it from healing, basically suppositories are not the right treatment for anal fissures, speak to your GP about nitro (Rectogesic) this will relax the sphincter when applied.

Yeah, next time i see the doctor, i ll get them to make an appiontment with a CRS or GP.
Well, i have changed my diet quite abit and am having High-fibre cereal in the morning and veggie soup in lunch and dinner, whole wheat pasta fir dinner again. I have read that some people dont have any dairy product and meat either. I dont know if their effects on my digestive system are good or bad! Also zero alcohol and caffeine.
couple days ago i saw an advertisement on newspaper. it was promoting NutraCleanse. here is the website
http://www.nutracleanse.biz/
i was already using flax seed, when i saw this ad, i wanted ti give it a try. I dont know how effective it is yet. I ll update here as soon as i see any affect.

Hey ridvan,
Welcome to the board! I live in California but used to head up to Whistler every 2 years to snowboard. Beautiful up there where you're from!
I did a quick Google search and Lax-A-Day seems to be polyethylene glycol, the same stuff we call Miralax here in the States and what UK'ers (and maybe all of Europe?) call Movicol. That stuff works wonders for a lot of us but you have to be sure you drink a ton of water with it for it to work well. I use it myself and it's the best stool softener for me personally.
It's not entirely clear what Ratio Proctosone is from my brief search. It looks like it's either hydrocortisone or dibucaine. I've tried hydrocortisone suppositories for my fissure and while they seemed to provide some very short term relief for the itching and burning, they aren't suitable for long term use IMO, because they are only temporarily putting down some inflammation and aren't relaxing the sphincter spasm that causes most fissures. I've also used dibucaine and it is nothing more than an analgesic; it helped reduce the pain while pooping a tiny bit, but that was it. Either way I'm not too confident in either one, personally, but if you get some short term relief then maybe you can use it until you get a second opinion... My general doctor also gave me hydrocortisone suppositories for my fissure, he basically thought the treatment was the same as for hemorrhoids, but a colorectal surgeon should know better (and did in my case).
BTW I know what you mean about giving up foods. I used to drink beer, eat lots of meat and fried foods, etc., but have given it all up since my fissure appeared. Now I'm all about "veggie soup for life!", drinking lots of water, and beef is a big no-no. If I do eat meat, which is very rare now, it's either chicken or fish only.
Good luck with the specialist, let us know how it goes!

Ridvan,
I took a cruise to the inside passage of Alaska about 10 years ago and enjoyed the stops in Vancouver better than the cruise. Neat place! Lots of people have given you good advice. I wanted to say welcome.

Hi all,
I wanted to update you guys!
It's great to be having BM without too much trouble , pain and blood. High fibre diet, water, and stool softeners helped me alot with easy and regular BMs. And Ratio-proctosone" seems very helpfull to reduce the pain after BM. However, as StevePain said, suppositories were kind of discomforting. I dont know if i am making or will make any healing process by sticking to this diet style and ointment!
@NeuropathicGuy: Yeah, Whisler is really good place for skiing and snowboarding! I havent been down to CA yet, but i really want to! The wather in Vancouver is suicidal! Image
