Hello Julia, are you in the UK?
I had LIS and Fissurectomy in August and was sent home with only Ibuprofen and Flagyl, and was in severe pain for weeks, when I asked for pain relief I was told to buy Paracetamol, as if that would do anything!!
I asked if you was in the UK because it seems here they don't believe in pain relief after rectal surgery, I know a few people that have been sent home with only Ibuprofen, however, in the US they prescribe Vicodin and Percocet and some other painkillers, so if you live in the US you should be ok, I would take any pain relief for the first few weeks but we all have different pain thresholds.

Hi Steve,
I'm not in the UK, but in the States, so I may be sent home with Vicodin, and the first doctor I visited (before finding my surgeon) gave me a bottle of it when I first went to a med center about the pain and bleeding. When I told my surgeon that I was taking the Vicodin, she said that she didn't like that for treating the fissure as it causes constipation, but that was when I was trying to treat the fissure with lidocaine ointment and diltiazem.
Hopefully she'll give me something for the pain from the surgery, but I understand not wanting to encourage patients with this procedure to take narcotics for any length of time, other than just post-surgery. I guess I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to pain, though, so I'd really like to just be able to sleep for a day or two when I get home after the procedure.

I was sent home with Vicodin but I never used it. They gave me one just before I left the hospital and it made me so loopy that I didn't want to go through that again. I think I have an irrational fear of losing control or something...who knows.
Thankfully my recovery was very mild and I didn't need anything more than Ibuprofin. I was given Lidocain (sp?) also and I used that on the incision site to numb things up. That combination and sitz baths got me through the first few days and I haven't needed anything since (2+ weeks post-op now).
If you can take the meds though, I would do it because it also indirectly calm your nerves knowing that you are getting some relief and that's a big plus in this game.
Good luck.

In my last two surgeries I was sent home with Percocet. When I had my LIS surgery in Jan they made me vomit. So I only took about 2 pills. I also hate the loopy/feeling lose of control. So I tend to shy away from narcs when prescribed. I view them more as a back-up if things get really bad. 2- 200 mg liquids Advil every 4 hours I find very effective.
It is important to stay ahead of the pain. You may want to discuss pain management strategy with your surgeon before the procedure.
Good luck on Friday.
