Diet/Miralax/Benefiber

Postby reidgirl » 02 Apr 2011, 08:22

I have LIS scheduled for 6/24 (after school is out)...until then my CRS has given me an RX for Nitro. I think I like it. I have had 2 very successful weeks with being able to pass gas. I've also played with the Miralax some. I've decreased it to half a capful rather than a whole one. I also take one dose of Benefiber at night right before the Miralax. What has happened is my BMs are more like the gold standard - one long piece and formed. I guess this is a result of the lower dosage of Miralax because I'm no longer having the feeling of not getting everything out and not having so much to clean up afterward. Before lowering the dosage, after I cleaned up good I still had to go back several times to continue cleaning up a little bit here and there.
The downside (yep, you knew there'd be one!)...is that the BMs seem very large and big at the beginning. I mean, I sit there thinking, "oh my, how's this going to come out?!" Afterward I feel a little sore but it seems to subside. To be honest with you, I'm not ruled by a diet. I do eat whole grain cereal for breakfast, eat yogut and usually a Lean Cuisine with a lot of veggies in it, and small portions of meat/fish with veggies for dinner. But, that's not all the time. For instance, I also eat lots of humus and pita chips. On the weekends we go out to eat and I try not to eat anything fried, but I don't limit myself to only salads or veggies.
So, the question for you experts is, what would you recommend? I certainly don't want to have a retear -- and I don't think I have, but lowering the dosage of Miralax seemed worth the risk. What do you guys think??? Is it the Benefiber bulking it up or lowering the Miralax, or am I messing myself up by not watching my diet more closely? Thanks guys!

I have been struggling with the diet/fiber/miralax thing also. Miralax is the only thing that has been helping me. I was eating too much fiber for awhile and the BMs were extra large and at least twice a day. The morning BMs were a little bit too firm in the beginning(the first 2 inches?) for my fissure's liking. It was suggested to me on this forum that I was eating too much fiber (see the thread for "I need help with miralax" or something like that). I was eating 40 -50 grams of fiber and one dose of miralax at dinner. Now I have lowered my fiber intake to 25-30 grams (mostly the whole grain part...I still eat lots of fruits and veggies). I put poultry and fish back into my diet, but no dairy still. I take a full dose of miralax at dinner time and I added a teaspoon of miralax before bed, which may just be helping me psychologically because that's not very much.
I think that for me the diet is important, but I don't freak out now if I eat too much bread or something other than veggies. The miralax seems to be working better for me now that I cut down on the fiber.
I have learned that I have to experiment...which can suck if you make a mistake.
Are you drinking lots of H20?
I hate that morning fear of "how is this going to come out?"
Good Luck...
