my surgeon is a general surgeon. She was very familiar with the procedure, but should I be seeing a CRS??

I would want someone who does these on a regular basis. If you cut too much you can have a incontinence problem. If you don't cut enough you don't get the relief you need to cure the fissure. Just my 2 cents.

I would ask how many LIS your surgeon has done, how many infections after surgery, success rate with his/her patients, ever any incontinence and any other concerns you may have.
I personally wouldn't let anyone but a CRS do any surgery on my rear end. That's just me. I wanted someone who specialized in butts, colo-rectal problems, who have done this more times than they could count...
I would definitely ask the questions above to any doctor, including a CRS before my surgery!

ok, found some flexeril in the medicine cabinet once used for my husbands back pain. Since it is a muscle relaxer can I try that? maybe heal from the inside out. I am done with ointments, I hate having a greasy butt and its hard to get into the rectum. I feel tight and swollen and cant seem to force anything up there. maybe thats why I have not healed?

Hey Sandi,
I'm not sure about the flexeril. I know valium which is a muscle relaxer helps with spasms. It may not hurt to try one to get some relief Image
The tight feeling/spasms is why fissures don't heal. LIS will permanently loosen the muscle that is clenched/in spasm.
We have a boardie who took valium for a year w/ a fissure before LIS, and became addicted. I don't think any muscle relaxer is a long term solution to fissures but if you can get some temporary relief before surgery then why not. I had to use it for a couple of weeks during my LIS recovery and it was a life-saver...

I had wondered too about something like flexeril, years ago I hurt my back and that's what they had given me, I once started to ask my CRS about trying it, but I never did, I guess I was thinking if that worked she would have tried it by now...But it wouldn't hurt to ask your Dr, I'd be curious to know what they say about that.
The spasms are the worst at least they are for me. I've been pain free now for 7 days, but I'm not holding my breath!

Oh wow Sandi- I was so where you are several months ago. Just couldn't stand the thought of surgery and fought against it so hard, thinking I just hadn't found the right thing that would rid me of this without surgery. Now I just wish I had done the surgery sooner . Like others have said, not to make light of surgery, but the aftermath is different than the actual fissure pain- pain, but more of a sore, deep pain where the incision was and not so much the being stuck with a knife repeatedly pain. And it is the beginning of healing. I was like you and almost canceled my surgery. I originally had an appointment with the general surgeon my family Dr recommended and met with his assistant. This was early during a month period when I had relief and so it didn't make sense to do surgery then. Then while in Texas visiting my sister, the day we were leaving for a beach stay, the thing returned. She knew of my problem and was sad for me . She works in a peridontist's office and she encouraged me to seek out a specialist- a CRS. Her analogy made sense to me in that I've had many a root canal. She said you wouldn't have gum surgery at your regular dentist and they usually send you to a root canal specialist because your roots are so small. Why wouldn't you find a good specialist for this? So when I got home, I did just that. It took a while to see him and he wanted to try a couple of rounds of Botox first, but eventually surgery is what did the trick. And it takes a while to feel "normal" for some of us- I am now eating much more like I used to, only healthier. I have a slightly different bathroom morning routine, but nothing that involves crying and wanting to end it all. And in the past two weeks, I have noticed big change in the area- I had a skin tag removed and that has been very sensitive where the scar tissue is externally. Several of us have this issue and I have to say, mine is getting better. If you have not developed a skin tag yet, all the better! Because you are where I was- 3 or 4 good days and then 3 or 4 bad days and it made it very confusing to decide if I should really have the surgery. A friend said, you might as well get the real healing to begin and be on that road instead of this up and down thing you are on now. Very good advice. These things trick you into thinking they are gone and then resurface and I'm convinced for some of us, surgery is really the best answer.
By the way, I have flexeril in my cabinet because I used to take it every night for fibromyalgia. I never once thought to try it for this purpose, but it makes some sense to me. I agree with Dawn that is it helps you in the interim to have less pain and spasms, go for it. But I wouldn't count on it being a "cure".

And Dawn, what would I have done without you, NG, and HappyAss??

By the way, the reason I stopped taking the Flexeril is that I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and their only recommendation was to stop taking the Flexeril. I noticed a big difference in my energy and clarity- I had not realized how dulling it was to me and the effect it had. It also really blurred my vision. So be careful with it. Try it at night and be aware you might still feel the effects the next morning if driving or whatever...- Also I don't remember having constipation as a result of it but I certainly had a dry mouth. I never had problems with constipation until suddenly the instance that started my fissure and subsequently, probably because of menopause. So I would check out the side effects- I would bet constipation is among them.

Bambi,
That is a wonderful post!:)
I don't know what I would have done without so many folks on here during my fissure days and before surgery either. Those were some dark days for me. :(
I remember wanting you to get the surgery so bad! I couldn't tell you how much I wanted you too, even when you were having your botox. I just knew you would get relief and you were as fearful of the procedure as I was before my surgery. It really hit home.
It's so good to see everyone doing so well. Image
