Got a refral and new meds

Postby Iona » 30 Sep 2011, 15:24

Hey all, been a while since my last post. To be honest i have just been getting on with it.
The suppositorys my GP gave me helped but I think they just lubricated the whole stool process and did little else than upset my tummy!
I have now gone back to the GP today and she has refered me to a specialist - couldnt get the type but presuming its a rear end doc of some sort. have 2 to 4 weeks to wait on that.
Sh also gave me new ointment, which is for fissures. Grr what i said to her in the first place but i guess they got for the simple option first.
The ointment is called Rectogesic, Glyceryl Trinitrate 4mg/g to use morning and night. What is the feeling on that one?
She said it was likely i would get hot flushes and headaches if is use too much but to keep going and reduce the dose - deepest joy...
I am worried about my diet too. She has suggested using stool softners but my stomach has been so upset lately i am not sure what to go for. I am just eatign what i feel like, probably not what i sould be eating.
Any thoughts on the med, gentle yet effective softners and should i be upping my veg intake and loosing the pizza?!
Thanks !
Iona x

I have been using rectogesic for just over 4 months and it has been good in calming things down (though I am now awaiting botox - the cream does work for some people). I use it twice a day, sometimes had headaches at the start and slight flushing but its trial and error. Paracetamol and reducing the dose slightly helps. I have IBS so get dodgy stomach days too, I use lactulose (small amount) and have one dulcoease tablet at night which helps. Most here use movicol though, I just use lactulose as its what works for me. As for diet - mine is boring due to IBS!! Can't really help there as I am quite limited. Drink lots of water! Hope this helps, some others may be able to advise you more :D

As for food: many people seem to find that red meat, dairy, and refined carbs (white bread, white rice, white pasta, etc.) constipate them and irritate their system.
You definitely should be making sure you get lots of fruit and veggies, eat whole grains (esp. bran), and drink lots of water. This will make your stool softer, and is just good for you in general. So, sadly, yes: ditch the pizza.

If you can't manage using rectogesic (because of the headaches) get Diltiazem (Anoheal) prescribed instead. Not too much fibre as your stools will be bigger....ouch!! And, use movicol/miralax to soften ur bms on exit! Vaseline is great inbetween using the prescription drugs and helps ease out bms without causing re-tears etc...

I second the Miralax recommendation. Many of us here (including me) have found it one of the best ways to have reliably soft BM's. I also second the Vaseline - before a BM (about 10 minutes) I apply vagisil to the area - it has a topical bumbing agent (20% benzoncaine). I give that 5-10 minutes, and then apply vaseline over it just before the BM to lubricate the passage. Are you taking baths? After a BM, hopping right into an already-run bath is the BEST thing for the pain.
