3 Weeks Post LIS

Postby FinnsMom » 22 Jan 2012, 01:51

Hey everyone! I just wanted to update you all on my progress now that it has been three weeks since my surgery.
I went on Thursday and had my follow up appointment with my CRS, he was very pleased with how well I've healed so far which was a big relief. I have really struggled with having regular BMs since surgery. I've had 4 soft BMs one day, several episodes of diarrhea the next, and then just one soft BM the day after that. I'm really struggling with my anxiety now, I'm not sure why being pain-free has stirred up my anxiety attacks but I'm wondering if that is the cause of my inconsistency.
Anyway to sum up, I'm having pain-free BMs, no spasms afterward, and really enjoying being a mom with no pain since I've never experienced that! I really want to cry when I think about how much I've missed with my son because of fissures and wish I would have been braver and had surgery sooner. It definitely would have made recovery easier to have a smaller kid to heft around!
But I'm so optimistic my husband and I are talking about having another baby! By c-section of course, I've had enough stitches between my legs to last a life time! It really helped that my surgeon has had numerous LIS patients have babies post LIS and be fine. I know I will be fine too :)
And I just want to say, for anyone that is lurking, if you have a fissure and you are willing to keep on suffering because you are so scared to have surgery - DON'T! The pain from surgery will last seconds compared to all the time you've suffered with your fissure! I thought about it this way, whether I have surgery or not I will be in pain the week after my surgery date, but if it's surgery pain then it's healing, otherwise it's just fissure pain. So why not take the chance? I hope that helps be the kick in the butt someone needs!

Yay! that's such good news!. I just had LIS 5 days ago and I already can't believe how amazing it is to have a pain-free bowel action!. I am still a bit sore due to the stiches of course but it's all nowhere near as painful as the fissure was. It's interesting you say that some days you may go to the toilet 4 times and the next day only once. I have been a bit inconsistent too. Today I went 5 times and yesterday only twice. Did your CRS think it's part of the healing process? and will take time to adjust back to the normal routine?.
I also have a baby. He is 4mths old and it's amazing to be able to enjoy him without any pain. My fissure began due to traumatic childbirth so I am a little nervous about having more children. Is vaginal birth not advised after LIS?.
I'm so glad your doing well. I also wish I had the surgery earlier! It has been like a miracle for me!.

Hi Penny! That's wonderful that you are feeling good so soon! I found that putting a heating pad against my butt really helped with the soreness. I had a fissurectomy along with my LIS so I still get sore at the fissure site if I sit on a hard chair or have lots of BMs. Pain-free BMs isn't something we are likely to take for granted ever again is it? Lol
Actually my CRS said that vaginal delivery would be no problem as long as the baby wasn't large (he said over 10 pounds, my son was 6lbs 13oz so that sounds huge to me lol). At this point in time, I think I would just opt for the c-section for my own piece of mind. I tore pretty badly with my son and it would just cause me a lot of stress to worry about tearing yet again. Also my biggest fissure is anterior which I think is where you are most likely to tear during childbirth?
So you're son's birth was traumatic? Is that when your fissure developed or did it happen later? They had to vacuum my son, and I tore just like centimeters from my butt and I wondered if it weakened that area because I didn't have pain until he was 4 weeks old.
As far as the frequency thing my CRS thought it could be a side effect of the GA they gave me during surgery but it's been 3 weeks, I doubt it's still lingering in my system lol. He told me to play with my Miralax dosage, he suggested taking it every other day or cutting it down to half. I was going to drop it to 3/4 of a capfull and go from there. Are you taking Miralax too?
Keep me updated Penny, I love to hear another mom is doing better too! Enjoy time with your little man :)
